We all have a series of messages or ideas that we have received and that have been transmitted to us, consciously or unconsciously, and that may be decisive at certain moments in life.

In stages of adequate functioning, in which things are going well and it seems that we are keeping pace with what is happening, it may seem that these messages are hidden or dormant, that it is not necessary to pay much attention to them or that they do not appear with a clear and determinant.

On the other hand, in moments in which we feel unbalanced, or that we have to make decisions or, perhaps, face changes, then they appear and become decisive.

How do the messages of life that we internalize influence us?

These messages of life They can be presented as limiting beliefs, empowering beliefs and, in both cases, they will be a perception of what surrounds us with a very decisive negative or positive charge.

Limiting life messages

Limiting beliefs are preconceived ideas that will limit the ability to respond or react to certain circumstances that They happen, under the idea and the limiting thought that we are not able to advance or achieve something other than what we interpret that we have in front of.

From this perspective, the vision of what happens, what we would call reality, is presented as something threatening, negative and facing little or nothing we can do. In this scenario, we place ourselves in the role of victims that blocks us and prevents us from moving forward, evolving or working towards certain objectives.

These beliefs do not have to be validated from an objective point of view. It may be enough to think and feel them as a valid concept from your own thought. or from a thought that has been given to us, on many occasions, by the environment or by the family itself.

On this scale we would have countless examples; some are very basic such as "everything goes wrong", "I am not good for dealing with people" and others can be more complex and make reference to life, the human being or personal relationships: “love is suffering”, “work is the most important thing in life lifetime"... These are just a few examples of immense possibilities. Most beliefs are endorsed by ideas and messages of life that have been repeated to us or we have repeated many times during our lives.

Enhancing Life Messages

There are also empowering life messages that become beliefs that allow us to move forward and overcome challenges. or changes that occur. These beliefs allow you to connect with your skills and learnings to apply them to new developments and challenges. These encourage you to put yourself to the test and find a way to get the best version of yourself. When we develop empowering beliefs, we are able to prioritize our own needs and not just attend to those of others.

How to manage them?

If the beliefs that determine attitude and behaviors are limiting, the good news is that they can be changed. How to do it requires training and commitment and following a series of steps.

The first is to properly identify that belief and the thought or thoughts that sustain it. It is also necessary to question those thoughts and try to question them, perhaps by tracking how they were formed, if they are based on a comparison with other people or situations.

The next step will be replace that belief with a new one that is empowering, build and repeat it so that it becomes a new belief of your own, sustain it in a new commitment and turn it into a challenge to develop. It will be necessary to link it with concrete actions that are chained and that bring a new result closer.
