The Battle of Okinawa
In this new video from Unprofesor we will explain "The Battle of Okinawa".
The Battle of Okinawa is a battle that took place on the island of Okinawa during the Second World War. He faced on the one hand the American troops and on the other hand the Japanese troops. This battle is considered the largest amphibious assault that It occurred in the Pacific and was, from April to June 1945. It is also known as typhoon of steel or steel rain because of the large number of ships and armored vehicles that the US high command put into play to conquer the island. In fact, the US high command set its eyes on this island because it is only 550 km from Japan and it was a strategic point for the future invasion of Japan.
In fact, 330 warships and about 1,140 transport ships came into play. You can imagine the number of ships and the enormity of the fleet. It is also considered the battle with the highest number of suicide attacks by the Japanese who used everything they had at hand (from airplanes to boats) to try to produce the maximum number of damage and casualties in the American troops. We therefore have that at the beginning of March, the disembarkation begins, but not on the island of Okinawa, but on neighboring islands to try to surround it and prevent the island from being replenished. That is to say, they are conquering nearby islands to act as a seat belt and it is not until the beginning of April 1945 that they finally disembark on the main island of Okinawa. You start in the north, where the defenses are less strong and the North American troops can quickly control the northern part of the island. There are also raids but they find that it is much more defended and it will cost them much more, to conquer the southern part of the island.
