Causes of the Spanish-American War
In this new video from Unprofesor we will explain the causes of the Spanish-American war.
This war is a series of military campaigns carried out by the army of Eunited states on against the last colonies of the Spanish empire. So much so, that as the Americans won, Spain lost the Philippines, the island of Guam, Puerto Rico and Cuba. Which were the last overseas possessions left to the other now, the great Spanish empire. The war is very short. Goes from April to August 1898. In fact, the final trigger for the hostilities was the explosion (in front of the port of Cuba) of the American warship USS Maine.
The ship exploded (the causes have never been explained since they do not know very well what caused it to detonate) but it was the spark that made the United States declare war on Spain. Let's see the causes that led to this war conflict. First of all we will look at the economic causes; In Cuba, Americans had many economic interests, there was a large American population living there. All thanks to the great sugar industry.
The United States had many economic interests on the island and did not allow Spain to maintain power on the island as they were taxed. Political causes; Cuba already from 1868 wanted to become independent from the metropolis (Spain).
