Emotional well-being and mental health in general are complex phenomena, influenced by everything type of experiences that we go through in our day to day (although we do not always realize it).

For this reason, when faced with the problems that affect us emotionally, not all solutions involve only interventions based on a biomedical vision of the human mind; some have to do with promoting processes of self-knowledge and personal development. In this sense, systemic coaching has been proposed as an aid in this regard; Let's see how it works through this interview with Georgina Hudson.

What is systemic coaching and what kind of problems can be addressed from it?

The question is interesting because people hear "systemic coaching" and interpret it as coaching teams or organizations. While ideal in those settings, systemic coaching is extremely beneficial in one-on-one sessions with people from all backgrounds (not just business).

This approach recognizes that the client does not function in isolation, but is a part of a system: the family, the couple, a class, or a team, friends, the community, among others. Systemic coaching explores how the ecosystem where the client is managed impacts him/her and how he/she impacts the system.

I would like to point out that in my practice I also interpret all the different emotions, which I call parts of each client, as an internal system that also needs to be attended as a whole or complete system itself same. The idea is to act as a guide so that my clients can "heal" and attend to their parts, accessing their most lucid and awake Self.

For example, a client contacted me because in the family business where he works, someone "had a mania" for him and this was distressing him. We analyzed his work environment, the way he related to others, and his and others' own motivations and needs. We work on your internal system and how you would adopt a new mindset, empowering beliefs and empowering habits. These changes did not only do him good, but also the work system where he develops. He was able to improve his interpersonal relationships, set limits respectfully, and have assertive communication.

Systemic coaching can treat any type of blocks, stagnation, fears, insecurities, and discomfort that a person feels on a personal level. as well as all those who are related to challenges or crises in their relationships, relationships with difficult family members, difficulties academic or relevant to this environment, work problems or with colleagues where your relationship does not flow, difficulties to get ahead, transitions, etc

What is a typical coaching session like?

At this point I would like to clarify that I am trained as a Transpersonal Therapist and Coach. With which I am going to respond from my experience, where in each session I add the forces of transpersonal psychology and Coaching.

A typical session with me is very dialectical, warm, close, the issues that afflict the client are discussed – her story, her experiences, beliefs, thoughts, habits, possibilities, challenges- and the gaze is extended to include the people who interact with him/her in his/her life. I am a facilitator who, using the dialogue with the client, favoring the conversation with his most lucid part, making powerful questions, and putting into practice coaching and mindfulness techniques, I help him to unblock and recover his can. The sessions give the client the necessary perspective to transcend the initial problematic situation, and to unfold.

With the discoveries that transpersonal psychology brings and the strategies that Coaching provides, my clients quickly gain an understanding of the world beyond themselves, recognizing their deepest needs, their potential, their desire, and deciding how to act in a harmonious and beneficial way for themselves. all. Between sessions, my clients typically have coaching activities to do. These serve to open your eyes, to better understand where you stand, to adopt the right mentality and to take the necessary actions to live your best version in an agile way.

Could you briefly explain some of the strategies used by coaches that are based on this type of intervention?

As far as my sessions are concerned, from Transpersonal Psychology and Coaching, I use circular questions a lot, contextualization, reformulation, powerful questions, metaphors, dialogue with archetypes, interaction with the wiser Self, and the elicitation. All of this encourages my clients to have a greater understanding of themselves and to actively explore their patterns, their assumptions, their biases, their emotions, and their tendencies. From there they evaluate whether these are empowering or not and what they can do about it. This helps them to have a healthier relationship with themselves and with the people around them.

How are coaching and psychotherapy combined?

Psychotherapy analyzes the patient's history to understand their behaviors, traumas, diagnosis, and their suffering. The emphasis is on understanding the “why” behind what is happening to you. Coaching focuses on “how to” empower the client and help them achieve their goals. In my sessions, clarity and understanding one's own story through transpersonal psychology is the first step. The strategic actions of coaching are the necessary consequence for the sum of "why" and "how" to give rise to transformation.

What are the aspects of working with coaching that you find most satisfying on a personal level?

What I love about coaching interventions is that it accelerates the discoveries of the psychotherapeutic process. Understanding and self-knowledge provides specific tasks and a commitment that facilitate the appearance of the best version of my clients. This fills me with emotion and illusion.
