Where the SUN rises and where it sets

Where the sun rises and where it sets

The sun rises in the East and sets in the West. The sun, the great star of our system, has always been one of the great enigmas for all civilizations that have inhabited our planet. In this lesson from a PROFESSOR we are going to talk a little more about this great element and that way you will be able to check how much you know about it, therefore, we propose you to talk about where the sun rises and where it setsDo you know the answer? Keep reading and you will see if you were right or not.

The study of the passage of days through ancient civilizations.

From the beginning of the first human populations, the cult of the elements of nature has been known, being, in most cases, Sun the most adored of all. It is our central star of the Solar system on which all the planets rotate in its orbit.

For this reason, it is known, due to studies carried out on different utensils, that populations soon began to study the behavior of the day system, where the night was always related to evil, because in the dark the human being looked helpless against the rest of the animals that coexisted with it.

But,where the sun rises and where it sets? This question has always been asked and, although it seems to have a logical and simple answer, it does not have one as we will see below.

The Cardinal points.

Before saying where the sun rises and where it sets, we must focus on defining the cardinal points that make up the so-called Cartesian reference system, an element that helps to position ourselves on the map through normalization.

That is, an agreement between the entire globe, by which we will follow the same guidelines; that way, we can know where we are going. Thus, the Cardinal points most important are:

  • North
  • South
  • East
  • West
Where the sun rises and where it sets - The cardinal points

The sun rises in the East and sets in the West.

The sun rises, theoretically in the East but, next, we have to mention some incongruities that will lead us to see that it is not true at all.

  1. We have to know that only twice a year the sun rises in the east, since the inclination of the earth and its translational and rotational movement mean that the points are not always on the same side.
  2. Similarly, it is said that the sun sets in the west and, as with the output, technically we can say that only twice a year this happens.

Everything we have mentioned is related to the length of days and nights throughout the year. Have you not stopped to think that there are days longer than others and on the contrary? This is due to the movement of the Earth and depends on how far or close you are from the sun at the time of its translation.

In this other lesson we will discover what are the planets closest to the Sun so that you know better the structure of our system.

In which two moments does it totally coincide?

To end our lesson on where the sun rises and where it sets, we must know that only in the spring and autumn equinoxes, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, which is related to the fact that the days and nights last the same.

Thus during the rest of the year, the sun rises a little further north in spring and summer; while in autumn and winter we will find that it will affect something towards the south.

The Cardinal points.

In order to better understand where the Sun rises and where it sets, it is essential to understand what are the cardinal points. When we talk about cardinal points we are referring to the 4 different directions that are referents for orientation. It is a system that allows us to orient ourselves on Earth taking into account different points that imaginary cross the Earth.

In a compass, the cardinal points are the four directions that mark the magnetism of our planet: the North, the South, the East and the West.

  • East: It is the point where the Sun rises, as we have already commented.
  • West: It is the point where the Sun sets.
  • North: It is located to the left of the East and marks the highest part of the Earth.
  • South: It is to the right of the East and on the opposite side to the North.
