Addition and subtraction of monomials
Remember that we are in the section of Algebra, the part of Math that studies and operates with abstract elements. Monomials are the basic unit of Algebra and with these you can make different operations. This would be a monomial:
In this video I will explain how to do the addition and subtraction of monomials. To add and subtract monomials, keep in mind that you can only add or subtract monomials with the same literal part (similar monomials), that is, we can add two monomials with the same letter and exponent, if not.
To add similar monomials we will have to add their coefficients and leave the same literal part. To subtract we will do the same but we will subtract its coefficients.
Look at the examples:
Sum or addition of monomials: 2x2y3z + 3x2y3z = 5x2y3z
Subtraction or subtraction of monomials: 2x3 - 5x3 = −3x3
When we have a addition or subtraction of different monomials we get a polynomial. We can also do a polynomial add or subtract from another polynomial. In the video you will also see how to do it.
If you want to practice with what I have taught you in today's class you can do the printable exercises with their solutions that I have left you on the web. I hope they help you!
