The neo-gothic or architectural style that influenced the work more, but this can also be considered as being eclectic architecture, pois combines elements of different styles and times.
This fact is most evident in the inclusion of a concrete dome on or over a cross, of Renaissance influence. It was inspired by the grandiose dome of Santa Maria del Fiore de Florença, projected by Filippo Brunelleschi.

In 1745, contudo, à "velha Sé" was attributed to the category of Cathedral. As the construction of the first building was done using a rudimentary technique and few standards, it is determined that the second version of the building is needed, exactly not the same place.
Barely in 1913 it started to build the church as we know it. The work was finished just 41 years ago.
This time, as it was not considered possible to its construction not the same local from the previous days (Largo dos Curros), a new cathedral was built in Praça da Sé, being the old temple demolished.
You Construction materials were entrusted and traced by Europe. This fato ended up representing the main obstacle to the completion of the work, because of the great duas World Wars (1914 - 1918 and 1939 - 1945) will end up considerably delaying the work of construction.
To Cathedral foi inaugurated on January 25, 1954, not the fourth centenary of the city of São Paulo, but still unfinished.
