What are the DIVISORS of 6

What are the divisors of 6

The divisors of 6 are 1, 2, 3 and 6.. In this lesson from a Teacher we help you understand divisibility and criteria. Ideal for children!

In this new lesson from a Teacher we will see what are the divisors of 6. We will start with the concept of divisibility and divisors, to continue with the divisibility criteria and continue with the prime and composite numbers. To finish we will see what are the divisors of 6.

6 is a small number, in fact it has its own divisibility criteria, therefore we should expect it to have few divisors. That is to say, the set of divisors of 6 will be of few integers. We are going to check then, that 6 is a composite number and not a prime number.

Let's use the Divisibility criteria to do it:

  • All numbers are divisible by themselves and 1, so two divisors of 6 will be the number 1 and the number 6.
  • The divisibility criterion of the number 2 tells us that if the number is even then it will be divisible by 2. We know that the number 6 is an even number, so we find another divisor of 6.

  • The divisibility criterion of the number 3 tells us that if the digits of the number are multiples of 3 or 3 then it will be a divisor. We know that 2x3=6, so 6 is a multiple of 3, therefore we find another divisor of the number 6.
  • The divisibility criterion of the number 4 says that its digits must be multiples of 4, but there is no integer that multiplied by 4 gives us the result 6, therefore the number 4 is NOT a divisor of the number 6.
  • The divisibility criterion of the number 5 says that if the number ends in 0 or 5 it will be a divisor, since it is only the number 6 we can confirm that the number 5 is NOT a divisor of the number 6.
  • To corroborate that the number 2 and the number 3 are definitely divisors of the number 6, we use the divisibility criterion of this, and we note that to be a divisor it must be simultaneously a multiple of 2 and of 3. We check that it is correct.

Finally we can say that the set of divisors of number 6 is made up of numbers 1, 2, 3 and 6.

Let's see if your divisions really are exact:

  • 6 / 1 = 6
  • 6 / 2 = 3
  • 6 / 3 = 2
  • 6 / 6 = 1
What are the divisors of 6 - All divisors of 6

In mathematics, when we talk about divisibility, we mean that one number is divisible by another only if the division between them is exact, that is, if it has no remainder. For this, the numbers that we use in the division must be integer numbers. So an integer will be divisible by another integer if its result is also an integer. The remainder of the division must be equal to zero for this to be true.

Whole numbers have a specific number of divisors and this will depend on how big or small the number in question is, that is, the number 15 will not have the same number of divisors as the number 420, for example.

When one number is divisible by another, it is said that these they are multiples of each other. The set of divisors that a number has, will be all those numbers that divide it into equal parts, without resulting in any remainder.

To find out if a number is divisible by another number, there are divisibility criteria that are used to find out.
