How to read notes in the treble clef

Although music is an art that focuses on sound, we must know that it is also considered a language. As such, it is very important to understand it as the language it is and this involves learning to read and write music notation. In this lesson from a TEACHER we will discover you how to read notes in the treble clef, an excellent step to begin your music learning journey and a crucial point for music reading.

The treble clef is the most frequently used clef in music reading, mainly for musical instruments. middle and acute tessitura (such as the flute, violin, oboe, and trumpet).

In English, this clef is called “treble clef”. For some instruments such as the piano and harp that use two musical keys simultaneously, the treble clef is used for the treble notes.

The symbol used for the treble clef is a stylized version the letter "G", which means Sun in alphabetical musical notation.

The first step to read in the treble clef is to take into account where is the note Sol, since after all this is the note that indicates this musical key. This is on the second line of the

staff, counting from the bottom up. On that occasion we will learn to read the notes of the most fundamental scale, which is the major scale.

The notes of the C major scale (do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, si and do acute or octave) are drawn in the following lines and spaces:

  • C: below the first line of the staff and with an additional line.
  • re: just below the first line of the staff, touching it.
  • E: on the first line of the staff.
  • fa: in the first space of the staff.
  • sol: on the second line of the staff
  • a: in the second space of the staff.
  • yes: on the third line of the staff.
  • C sharp (octave): in the third space of the staff.

The notes mentioned above correspond only to one octave, that is, starts in C and ends again in C, the eighth note. Although this would be the main notes, remember that as well as C, the other notes can also be repeated but being lower or higher.

To read these notes, all you have to do is continue numbering the notes in order, taking into account whether they are ascending (upwards, from low to high) or descending (downwards, from high to low). In the case that they are descendants, you should only name the notes backwards, like this: Do (octave), si, la, sol, fa, mi, re, do... and continue to the grade you want to achieve.

The notes on the staff do not actually have a limit, but it is very rare that you find very extreme notes, mainly because very few instruments have such a wide range (the number of notes they can play from lowest to lowest acute). When this happens, it is common that the treble clef is then stopped, in order to play lower notes. This is when we resort to changing it to the clef of C or the clef of F.

The musical clef is presented as a symbol at the beginning of the staff and indicates a specific reference note to locate the height of the rest of the notes. The musical clefs used today are: the bass clef and the C clef and the treble clef, which is the most common and which we will learn about in this article.

How to read notes on the staff

It is very important to remember that the notes on the staff are placed both in the lines and in the spaces and that the note should be placed right in the middle (of the line or of the space) so that its reading is quite clear.

When the notes leave the staff, we use the so-called “additional lines”, both above and below the 5 basic lines of the staff and which are only used in this case. As many additional lines can be drawn as required.
