How to make American pancakes, in 7 steps

Perfect pancakes are part of a delicious breakfast. The picture of the typical American breakfast is not complete without a tower of American pancakes. They have undoubtedly become a good option to taste in the mornings.

The advantage is that they are easy to prepare and can be accompanied with many other ingredients. Of course, they can be addictive, which is why they became so popular and everyone wants to have pancakes for breakfast.

Recipe for making perfect American pancakes

The pancakes should be round and fluffy. And while practice is important to get them that way, it doesn't take much to do it either. As we already said, part of their success is in the simplicity and speed with which they prepare.

It is enough to have all the ingredients ready and at hand so that its preparation is quick. These are simple ingredients, which are surely commonly consumed in your home, which makes them an economical option for breakfast.

Ingredients for making American pancakes

This recipe is for approximately 10 or 12 pancakes. You need 150 grams of wheat flour or special flour for pancakes. If you are going to prepare them with wheat flour, you need:

  • 1 tablespoon of sugar.
  • 8 grams of baking powder
  • 1 glass of milk (approximately 200 ml)
  • 1 egg
  • A small tablespoon of butter.

You will need a mixer or blender and a medium-sized round skillet.. To accompany the pancakes there is an infinite variety of options. You can use different jams, custards, hazelnut or chocolate cream, chocolate chips, honey, condensed milk... You can also sprinkle them with cereals and add some fruits.

1. Mix

A fundamental part of good pancakes is the perfect mix. Although it only consists of adding the ingredients and mixing them, this is where you have to be careful with the exact amounts and add some extra ingredient that can give it a different flavor, if we want to vary the recipe. The goal in this first step is to achieve the perfect mix and consistency.

In a container you have to add the flour, sugar, yeast and a pinch of salt. You have to stir them until they are well integrated. In another container add the milk, the egg and the previously melted butter. They are mixed with the blender or failing that with a blender. To this are added the dry ingredients, which are also incorporated with a mixer.

2. Preparing the pan

A medium-sized round skillet is needed. As a preference, it should be made of non-stick material. In this way we do not have to add more butter than what was already incorporated into the mixture previously. But if you don't have a nonstick skillet, add a little butter to the pan before adding the mixture.

The skillet should be placed on high heat for one minute. Then you have to lower the temperature to medium level. If we need it, add a little butter and when it has melted, the mixture is incorporated.

3. Cooking the dough

The amount of mixture must be adequate for the thickness you want to obtain. They shouldn't be too thin, but it's not a good idea to make them too thick either.. Of course, they must cover the entire surface of the pan so that they have a perfect round shape. For this reason, the pan should be medium or small in size.

The fire must be at a medium level so that it does not burn, wait long enough until bubbles start to appear on the entire surface. Then with the help of a shovel or spatula, you have to turn the pancake and wait about 15 seconds once the pancake has been turned.

4. The pancake has been cooked

It is important not to turn the pancake ahead of time. To ensure that it is well cooked or that it will not burn, it is important to flip them when the bubbles appear, and be careful not to leave them in the fire for a long time on the other side, so that they do not burn. The color of the pancake should be more or less homogeneous.

It is also important that you do not pour too much mixture so that they are thick, as this could cause them to not cook well and leave parts a little raw inside. Once the pancake has been cooked, it must be removed from the heat and placed on a plate. Cover it with a napkin or cloth until the next pancake is present, which we will place on top.

5. What if they were raw or burned?

The first pancake is the one that serves as a reference to adjust the level of the fire. If they have been very burned, you have to lower the level of the fire. If they are taking a long time to cook, then the heat can be increased a little. If it starts to burn but is still raw inside, you need to pour less mixture.

This is the step to verify before proceeding with the next pancakes. Even the taste can be checked to see if it requires a little more sugar. It is also true that experience here is important. Surely the second time you prepare pancakes, you will know the quantities and times with greater precision.

6. Serve the pancakes

Once the mixture is finished, serve the pancakes. We have surely created a typical American pancake tower. The custom is to serve two to three for each dish and then accompany it with different ingredients, such as the ones we have previously proposed.

Once the pancakes are served on the plate one on top of the other, a thick liquid ingredient such as jam, honey, liquid chocolate or maple syrup is poured. Another great idea is to sprinkle some cereal or seeds on top. Also some fruit such as strawberries, raspberries, or banana in small pieces.

7. Other ingredients

With pancakes you can get creative. Once you've mastered the traditional American pancakes, you can add other elements to the original mix., which in addition to giving it a good flavor, makes them a little healthier.
