What is Central America?

America is the second largest continent in the world, being only surpassed by Asia, thus occupying most of the Western Hemisphere. Its size is so great that in certain cultures and societies it tends to divide into two or three parts, being able to be divided in Latin America or Anglo-Saxon, but generally being divided on North America, South America and Central America.

The part of the continent that interests us in this lesson is the central part, that is, the part between North America and South America, being located above the equator.

Central America it is located between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, being surrounded by east and west by them. It should be taken into account that the part of the Atlantic Ocean is what is usually called the Caribbean Sea, with many of the Central American states being related to the different islands of the Caribbean.

As for its limits in front of North America and South America it is difficult to say, since the borders are not entirely certain. As for countries, it can be said that to the north it borders with Mexico, and to the south with Colombia, although in the latter case the Darién Jungle is usually used as a limit.

The area of Central America is about 522,760 km2, being smaller than both the south and the north and also smaller than either of the other continents. Although it must be taken into account that it is still a part of a continent for many geographers, so it is unfair to compare it with them.

Its total population is about 44,671,601 inhabitants approximately, since it must be taken into account that the number of the population varies every second. The population can be measured with that of other continents such as Oceania, which barely exceeds 40 million of inhabitants, so that Central America even being only a part of the continent surpasses the region oceanic. Its most populated cities are Guatemala City and San Salvador.

List of Central American countries and their capitals.

In Central America we can only speak of 7 sovereign countries, that is, 7 states with total autonomy, with their own government, and that do not depend economically on any different state. It is a small number of states, which are also distributed in a very small portion of space, since the central zone is not as wide as the south or north.

It should be taken into account that many of these states are quite young compared to the countries of other continents such as Europe, since many of them were part of the colonies of large European states such as Spain. It was with the liberal revolutions that the first states of Central America separated from the Spanish, forming many of the countries we know and respect today.

It should be taken into account that the vast majority of states in Central America come from the same culture, Mesoamerica, which consisted of important civilizations such as the olmec, The maya or the aztec. For all this, most of Central American countries has a lot of similarities, being influenced by centuries of joint history.

Next, we discuss what are the Central American countries and the capital of each one, using a list that is as updated as possible, for cases in which a country may change capital. To name these states, we are going to place the name of the country on the left and the name of its capital on the right. The list of Central American countries in 2019 is the next:

  • Belize: Belize City.
  • Costa Rica: San José.
  • El Salvador: San Salvador.
  • Guatemala: Guatemala City.
  • Honduras: Tegucigalpa.
  • Nicaragua: Managua.
  • Panama: Panama City.

List of dependencies of Central America and their capitals.

To end this lesson on the different countries of Central America and their capitals, we will talk about the different dependencies found in this part of the continent, and comment on which are their capitals.

Dependence is the way we call all those regions that lack their own autonomy, since they depend to a greater or lesser extent on another country, therefore being part of the territory even though they are distance. In the case of Central America there are very few dependencies, but it is equally important to know them.

To list the dependencies we are going to add to the method used in the previous section, also placing the state on which they are dependent. In the list we will place on the left the name of the country itself, on the right the city that is its current capital and in parentheses the state on which it depends. For all this, the list of dependencies of Central America in 2019 are as follows:

  • Clipperton Island: No capital. (France)
  • Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina: San Andrés. (Colombia)
