At the moment there are 194 sovereign states according to the UN, not counting among these countries dependencies or unrecognized states such as Kosovo. The countries in the world: definition and summary.
We denominate country to a territory with about geographical limits and a unique culture of its own. Countries must be sovereign states, possessing a political force that can direct the various affairs of the population. All countries must have these characteristics to be named in this way.
On the other hand, we can find situations in which certain territories have some of these characteristics, although not all, and countries are not considered as such. These situations are where the dependent territories and disputed territories:
- Dependent territories: are those who do not have total independence, nor are they part of the State that governs them, possessing some autonomy but with fewer rights than other states. Some examples of dependent territories are Hong Kong, dependent on China, or Gibraltar, dependent on the United Kingdom.
- Disputed territories: characterized by being areas in which it is located in dispute their sovereignty between several countries, or because it does not have defined borders. Some of these countries are Kosovo or Crimea.

States with limited recognition.
We have already mentioned about these countries, which although they are recognized by some institutions or countries, are not considered as own states, not being part of the 194 countries of which we have spoken. There are mainly two criteria that are used to recognize a country as valid, which are the following:
- Be recognized by at least one country that is part of the UN. This is because the UN is the institution of which all sovereign countries are a part. The only exceptions of non-member countries that are considered recognized countries are the two observer countries, that is, Palestine and the Holy See.
- Possess a delimited territory, a stable population, a government and being able to establish relations with other countries.
