Names of the world's oceans
Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic and Antarctic Oceans, these are the names of the world's oceans. In total there are 5 oceans spread throughout the globe and, depending on where they are located, their name is one or the other. Unlike the seas, the oceans are very large areas of salt water where a wide variety of marine animals and plants live.
The depth of the oceans is also much greater than that of the seas, falling 11,034 meters at a point in the Pacific Ocean. In this lesson from a teacher we are going to discover you what are the names of the world's oceans and their location on the map, so you can easily find them on our planet.

Oceans of the world: map and names.
Now we are going to place the oceans on the world map but, also, determining the name of each continent so that you can see exactly which areas of the world they adjoin and thus be able to easily locate them on a map.
But first we are going to show you the names of the world's oceans from largest to smallest:
- Pacific Ocean: 200,700,000 km2
- Atlantic Ocean: 106,400,000 km2
- Indian Ocean: 73,556,000 km2
- Antartic Ocean: 20,327,000 km2
- Arctic Ocean: 14,090,000 km2
An interesting note is that the last two are also known by the name of "Arctic Glacier" and "Antarctic Glacier", that is, they can be called both ways.
When we speak of "ocean" we refer to a part of our planet that is occupied by marine water and, unlike the seas, its extension is much greater, it has more depth and a greater number of marine species, many of them still unknown due to being human.
Four billion years ago the world's oceans were formed and are distributed around our planet separated by continents or large archipelagos. Below you will find the map of the world oceans and continents so you know how to find them easily.
In a teacher we discover you how many continents are there and their names so that you know, also, the different theories between the existence of 5, 6 or 7 continents.
World's largest oceans.
Now that we know the names of the world's oceans, let's do a little more research on them in order to discover some of the main characteristics and better understand our planet. The largest oceans there are are:
Pacific Ocean with 200,700,000 km2
It is the largest ocean we have in our world and, in fact, it occupies one third of the Earth's surface. Here there are also 25,000 islands, a very large number that, in fact, exceeds the number of islands that the rest of the oceans have together! These islands are located below the Equator.
It is in this ocean where we find the deepest point on earth, it is located in the Mariana Islands and, as we have pointed out before, it descends 11,034 meters.
The Pacific Ocean borders:
- The Arctic in the North
- America in the East
- Asia and Oceania in the West
- Antarctica in the South
Atlantic Ocean with 106,400,000 km2
This ocean of the world is the one in charge of separating the American continent from Europe and Africa. The name of this ocean comes from Greek mythology where we find Atlas, one of the titans that are part of these ancient legends. It is the second largest in the world and occupies 20% of the earth's surface.
The Atlantic Ocean borders:
- The Arctic in the North
- Europe and Africa in the East
- America in the West
- Antarctica in the South
Indian Ocean with 73,556,000 km2
It is the third largest ocean in the world and, also, it is estimated that it occupies 20% of the planet, approximately. Here we also find how there are small islands that are found on the continental edges, areas that are still considered oceans and not seas.
The Indian Ocean borders:
- Asia in the North
- Oceania and the Pacific in the East
- Africa and the Atlantic in the West
- Antarctica in the South
In this other lesson from a teacher we discover a list of countries and capitals of the worldthat will help you better understand the distribution of our planet.
Smallest oceans of the world.
Now we are going to discover the names of the world's smallest oceans and their characteristics, as well as we will indicate with which continents they delimit so that it is easier for you to locate them.
Antarctic Ocean with 20,327,000 km2
The extension of this ocean reaches 60 degrees to the South, this is the limit that has always been marked to determine where this ocean ends and the rest of the oceans begin: Atlantic, Pacific and Indian. It was the International Hydrographic Organization that delimited this ocean in 2000. This ocean completely surrounds the Antarctic area and is, together with the Arctic, the only one to go around the globe.
Arctic Ocean with 14,090,000 km2
This is the smallest ocean in the world and it comes into contact with the Atlantic from its North face. It surrounds the North Pole and is distributed throughout the north of the Asian, American and European continents.
