Why is it important to know how to manage emotions?

Emotions are often spoken of as if they were psychological elements totally beyond our control; events that influence us unilaterally, but cannot be affected by our decisions.

Thus, we assume that emotions are something similar to meteorological phenomena: they are there and not we could conceive of life without them, but at the same time before their existence we can only adopt a role passive.

However, this is a mistake. It is true that we cannot handle everything that makes us feel emotionally at will, and we are not capable of totally suppressing emotions, as if they had never occurred. However, we have significant leeway both in terms of how they appear in our minds, and also in terms of what they lead us to do and feel.
