The birth of the kingdom of Tolosa.

It was the first barbarian kingdom within the Roman empire which had its appearance in the year 418, with Ataulfo (410 -415), which ended with a conspiracy to end the Roman emperor Honorius, who in gratification allowed them to establish themselves as an autonomous kingdom over Bordeaux, Toulouse and Nabona.

In this way, the kingdom became an ally of the empire fighting rural crime, Saxon pillage and the Swabian uprisings in the Iberian Peninsula. With Alaric II (484 - 507), he supposed the disappearance of the kingdom of Tolosa as such, he died in the Battle of Vouillé when facing the troops of the Frankish king Clovis I who were fighting to regain that part of their territory.

The Visigothic Arian kingdom.

After defeat in battle, Gesaleico (507-510), son of Alarico II initiates the retreat to Hispania leading his people to a new kingdom. It was in the year 507 when they finally settled in the Iberian Peninsula Although contact with other Germanic cultures that were in this it was difficult for them to accommodate, different victorious struggles gradually took over the most important nuclei such as Seville, Mérida, Tarragona or Barcelona. However, it was not until the time of Leovilgido (568-586) when the Visigothic kingdom was definitely a Hispanic kingdom, establishing the capital in Toledo.

This king is not only characterized by work of territorial expansion that he carried out but also by internal reforms such as uniting religion, although they were Christians, they followed a heresy, Arianism. His son Hermenegildo influenced by his wife who was Catholic led him to conversion causing a civil war between father and son, Leovigildo previously sent his son to rule part of Baetica at that time of struggle for religion Hermenegildo had the help of the Byzantines, however he lost the war, Leovigildo ordered to kill his son so that Recaredo was left as the only inheritor.

In this video of a PROFESSOR we discover the entry of the Visigoths to Spain after the fall of the Roman Empire.

The Catholic Visigothic kingdom.

Recaredo I (586-601), during the reign of his father Leovigildo was convinced of his Arian faith, however convinced that the believers of the Arian faith were a minority he renounced Arianism and Christianity became the official religion in the year 589. Other important kings within this reign was Suínthila (621-631) who achieved submission of the Wascones and the overthrow of the Byzantines in Baetica, in this way the peninsula was completely united.

Witiza (702-710) is also considered important since this was the last legitimately chosen king, because until then when a king died he was selected from among the nobles at the primus inter pares who was appointed king, after his death and despite the fact that his three children were minors, he had named them heirs.

However, according to the Mozarabic chronicle, Rodrigo (710-711) occupied the throne in a violent way with a minority part of the aristocracy in his favor, which ended up provoking internal conflicts that occurred at the time when the Arabs had begun to assault some populations in the south of the Iberian Peninsula and ended with the defeat of Rodrigo on the battle of Guadalete in the year 711 with the invasion of the Muslim troops, after a disloyalty of their own nobles, This is how the Visigothic kingdom came to an end, starting a new kingdom in the Iberian Peninsula, Al Andalus.

In this other lesson from a TEACHER we discover a summary of the muslim invasion.
