What was the Korean war?
Before talking about the antecedents of the war, we must define it briefly, to understand the main concepts of the conflict and the reasons for its importance in history.
The Korean war It was a confrontation between the Republic of Korea or South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, being the first supported by the United States and its allies and the second supported by the USSR and China. Their support makes it one of the wars that make up the call
Cold War, being one of the highest deaths, with almost 15% of the Korean population. The war ended with a great armistice, leaving the situation as it was before the war and dividing Korea into two nations: the so-called North Korea and South Korea. These nations are the ones we know today, largely maintaining the ideology of then.
The origin of the two new nations, being one of the first confrontations between the nations rivals of the Cold War and its harsh consequences for Korean societies, makes it one of the the wars with greater relevance after World War II.
Korea's domestic background.
To talk about Korea's background, we must bear in mind that these were both internal and external, the first being the ones that we are going to comment on in this section. The set of Causesevents within the Korean nation that led to the start of the war were the following:
A constant situation of dependence on other nations
The history of Korea in the first half of the 20th century is that of depend on other Asian nations more powerful, that through their great power made this area one more dependency of their nations. At first under the dependence of Japan and later with small interventions by China and the USSR. During this period a spirit of independence began to be treated, bringing a division of the nation in two depending on the type of independence that the Koreans sought.
Korea Division
The invasion of Korea by various nations during World War II finally led to the division of the region into two parts, one of them occupied by the USSR and the other by an occupation of the United States. The USSR relied on communist leaders such as Kim Il-sung, while the United States supported the Korean provisional government that was in exile during the war. After the Second World War it was decided to divide the region in two along the 38th parallel, with each half for each of the parts, being areas very similar to those we know in the present.
Rise of communism in South Korea
In the north is where the influence was communist, and in the south the capitalist, but this was not the case in an absolute way, since opposing foci originated in the areas, the rise of communism in the southern area being very important. North Korea secretly supported these communist insurgencies in the south, causing a great tension that would lead to the start of the war. Capitalist movements in the north were much less common, although according to some sources in the case of the north the repression could have been greater.
External antecedents of the Korean War.
To continue with this lesson on the antecedents of the Korean War we must talk about the causes with external intervention that led to the birth of war, since in the twentieth century most wars also have a series of antecedents born of foreign nations.
Chinese Civil War
After the end of the war between China and Japan, the Chinese country returned to the civil war which had started years before the start of World War II. The war was between the so-called communists and the nationalists, the first being aided by North Korea, which considered that both groups shared a similar ideology. After the victory of the communists in the war, China became a great ally of both the USSR as from North Korea, helping by sending troops and weapons to the Communists in the Korean War.
United States and the USSR
The ideological war between the United States and the USSR is known as the Cold War, being a conflict that spanned decades and touched almost every possible area. Both nations fought so that their ideology was the predominant one and therefore they participated in numerous wars supporting the group with which they shared thoughts. In the case of the Korean War, both nations contributed a large amount of weaponry and they were the cause of all the blood caused by the conflict. The intervention of both nations set a precedent, being the first case of military interventionism that would appear at numerous times in the following years.
