The oldest plant on the planet
The oldest plant of the Earth has about 100,000 years old and it is located in the Mediterranean Sea. These are the results of the incredible finding of a group of researchers from the Higher Council of Scientific Investigations of Spain (CSIC), whose results are published in the specialized journal PLoS ONE. In a PROFESSOR we are going to talk to you about this interesting discovery that has occurred on planet Earth.
A discovery of great ecological value, since it is about the oldest plant in the biosphere, which will allow scientists to further study the evolution of plant species and contribute to their survival.
Located on the island of Formentera, the plant in question is a clone of the Posidonia species oceanic. An endemic marine plant, of great beauty, but that is in danger of extinction.
In order to study the characteristics of these plants and guarantee the survival of this species, the Scientists have taken samples from around fifty Posidonia oceanica meadows, from Cyprus to Almeria. The scientists' conclusions show that it is a kind of
quick and easy adaptability to the environment, and to its changes. The samples of these species located in the depths of the Mediterranean Sea show that the plants are actually a clone of those from thousands of years ago, which have been reproducing. A species that has survived and it has been able to develop thanks to its incredible resistance, despite the degradation of the environment in which they inhabit.
A finding that will allow get to know the plant species a little better that existed thousands of years ago, and that therefore will be decisive in establishing the necessary means that guarantee the survival of the oceanic Posidonia, which is currently seriously threatened.
