Comparison between mitosis and meiosis

Comparison between mitosis and meiosis

Cells have two ways to multiply or reproduce: mitosis and meiosis. These two forms of reproduction are very similar, but they have key differences. It is precisely these differences that make one or another type of reproduction more suitable for a type of cell, a situation or a tissue. If you want to know what differences we can find and see a comparison between mitosis and meiosisWe encourage you to keep reading this lesson from a TEACHER!

Before being able to make a comparison between mitosis and meiosis, we suggest you review what exactly these two processes are.

Both mitosis and meiosis are processes by which cells multiply, reproduce, duplicate, or propagate. This type of reproduction occurs mainly in the cells of multicellular organisms or multicellular, since organisms with a single cell (such as bacteria) have their own forms of reproduction.

If you want to know more about What is meiosis? or What is mitosis? We recommend that you take a look at these lessons from a TEACHER. These lessons cover each of the types of cell reproduction in more depth.

Due to all the characteristics that we have seen so far, we can deduce a majority characteristic, which summarizes all of them. The cell will use one or another type of reproduction according to a purpose, function or objective within the whole of the organism's functioning.

  • The meiosis occurs in cells whose purpose is to reproductionIn other words, they are in charge of the perpetuation and continuity of the species and therefore they need that variability that interbreeding gives them.
  • Instead, the mitosis are produced in cells whose purpose is to growth and maintenance of the individual in question; mitosis occurs during the generation of tissues in the embryonic period but also during their renewal and repair throughout life. Mitosis is responsible for our growth and survival, while meiosis is responsible for the perpetuation and maintenance of the species.
