What is the hippocampus

In this BIOLOGY video we will explain "What is the hippocampus".

What is the hippocampus. The hippocampus is a super important structure for our memory. In the hippocampus we see that we find a key region in which short-term memory becomes long-term memory. Therefore, it is essential to generate new learning, new habits... It is a region that clearly participates in explicit memory. This is a type of memory that it is verbalizable. It is the memory that I am using now to be able to communicate with you. In this sense, I would like to differentiate what does not happen in the hippocampus. In the hippocampus, it is not a structure that is relevant when it comes to generating motor learning. Play the guitar, go by car, bike... because for this type of learning another type of memory is required, which is; the memory of doing. In the explicit memoir I am moving from "episodic" to "autobiographical" learning. Recall scenes from my own life or verbalize those memories. This type of verbalizable memory (say; do I remember or don't I?) has to do with the hippocampus. The hippocampus is also an important structure when it comes to recognizing elements that help me locate myself at a spatial level. Where I am? Have you been here before? What elements do I use to guide myself? It is not surprising that in the hippocampus we find the source of amnesias.
