The classic model of integration between body and mind and the old empirical references with which it was tried to explain how mental disorders could contribute to the development of chronic medical illnesses, have been displaced by a body of theories and scientific evidence that integrate Liaison Psychiatry and Psychosomatics. Thus, for example, the proinflammatory effects that can lead to arthritis or Multiple Sclerosis or cancer-associated immunosuppression occurring in patients suffering from Depression. Similarly, the effect of antidepressants is recognized as coadjuvant in the treatment of inflammatory diseases, autoimmunity, neuropathic pain, as well as the regulatory effect on dysfunctions of metabolism, appetite, digestion and activity sexual. This area of knowledge, referred to as Psychoimmunology, is under development and now provides a new approach to the treatment of immune and mental illnesses.
