How to calculate the irreducible fraction

IMPORTANT NOTE: In this video there are some miscalculations. These errors are corrected with annotations above the video but not everyone can see them if you do not have the viewing of YouTube annotations activated. Therefore, I am going to list them here:

  • Minute 5.02: 6 x 3 is 18! The final result would be 38/30
  • Minute 6.11: 15 x 2 is 30! The final result would be 86/60

Sorry for the inconvenience !!!

In mathematics, a irreducible fraction It is a fraction that cannot be reduced or simplified, that is, the numerator and denominator do not share factors in common (other than unity). A fraction is written on your minimal expression when there is no other equivalent fraction that can be written in simpler terms. A fraction that is not irreducible, is said to be reducible, or that is not written in simplest form. An equivalent definition of an irreducible fraction is a fraction that is irreducible if the numerator and denominator are prime numbers to each other, that is, the greatest common divisor is 1).

In this video I will explain how to calculate the irreducible fraction. Irreducible fractions are those that cannot be simplified. For this reason, to calculate the irreducible fraction what we will do is simplify fractions, that is, make the fraction smaller.

To do this, we will divide both the numerator and the denominator by the same number and thus we will obtain a new fraction. We will continue dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number until the fraction cannot be reduced further. Look at the example:

In this case we have made two divisions by the same number, 2. But it doesn't necessarily have to be the same number.

In the video I explain how to get the irreducible fraction through different examples that will help you understand it better.

Also, on the web I have left you some printable exercises with their solutions so that you can practice what you have learned in this lesson.
