The romanticism It is a cultural, artistic and literary movement that was born in England and Germany at the end of the 18th century and developed in Europe in the first half of the 19th century. This movement arises as a reaction against the rationalism of the Enlightenment and promotes a new way of understanding the reality in which reason is left aside and greater importance is given to feelings, passions and the fancy.

In Spain, the romantic poetry it triumphed quite late, because of the difficulties that absolutism placed on the diffusion of liberal ideas and European culture. However, in the second half of the century, this movement began to gain momentum and new authors identified with romanticism began to appear. Each one of them wrote in a singular way, so that we can distinguish three different types of romantic poetry.

• narrative poetry. Narrative poetry is about poems that tell a story. The arguments of these poems present the typical elements of romantic narratives, such as mystery, death, the supernatural, passionate love, etc. Usually, these poems are written as romances, which is the popular metrical form traditionally used for narrative poetry. It consists of an indefinite series of octosyllabic verses that rhyme in assonance, the even ones leaving the odd ones loose. The main author of the romantic narrative is Jose de Espronceda, with works like The student from Salamanca.
• intimate poetry. Intimate poetry is one that expresses the most personal and intimate feelings of the author, such as love, loneliness, uncertainty, anguish, fear of death, etc. These are rather short poems that have a simpler and more direct metric and vocabulary. Within this type of romantic poetry we include two great poets who are becquer and Rosalia de Castro.
• Poetry of the exaltation of romantic ideals. Finally we want to introduce you to the third type of romantic poetry: the poetry of exaltation of romantic ideals. This is a type of work that vindicates romantic ideals, such as freedom, rebellion, breaking the rules, rejection of society, injustice, etc. That is why this type of poetry is sometimes known as "rebel poetry." Sometimes praised marginal characters who live on the margin of society and its norms, they also attack it as a way of showing that rejection. We refer to outcasts as pirates, thieves, criminals, etc. These poems are usually longer and have several stanzas and several meters. The tone used is rhetorical and even declamatory on occasions. The main author of this type of romantic poetry is again Jose de Espronceda, with works like Songs, The devil of the world, Hymn to the sun, etc.
