What is Algebra
The Algebra It is one of the branches of the Math. On Secondary education work begins with Algebra since before it is not possible because students find it very difficult to work with abstract elements.
In this video I will explain what is algebra and what is its basic unit. Algebra is the part of Mathematics that studies the combination of abstract elements. These elements can be considered as numbers as we study in Arithmetic and, for this reason, Algebra is considered an extension of Arithmetic.
The basic unit of Algebra is the monomial, which is an algebraic expression in which natural exponents and numerals are combined.
An example of a monomial would be this:
The monomial consists of different parts:
- coefficient: is the number that appears by multiplying the variables (in the example 3)
- literal part: It is made up of the letters (in the example x) and their exponents (in the example 4).
Keep in mind that within a monomial there is no addition, only multiplication. But if we can add or subtract two monomials thus forming a polynomial:
