What are Roman numerals?

The Roman numerals they use capital letters to represent the corresponding value and are so named because they were extended during the period of the Ancient Rome, although it is a numbering based on the Etruscan numbering. Those letters cannot be repeated more than three consecutive times and are:

  • I: 1
  • V: 5
  • X: 10
  • L: 50
  • C: 100
  • D: 500
  • M: 1,000

Thus, as you can see, with seven letters they were able to write all the numbers. However, one of the reasons Roman numerals fell into disuse was that

they have no way of expressing the number zero.

Another reason was that it was necessary to have a good command of basic operations, since you have to know how to add and subtract to be able to write the numbers.

Abstract examples.

Let's see a list of examples of roman numerals. Let us remember that, to write in Roman numerals, we have to be clear that there are certain rules. The first is that the number I can only subtract from V and X; the second is that X can only subtract from L and C; finally, C can only subtract from D and M. A smaller number to the left of a larger one is subtracting.

A smaller number to the right of a larger one is adding. Now yes, let's see the examples:

  • 7: VII
  • 19: XIX
  • 23: XXIII
  • 35: XXXV
  • 49: XLIX
  • 56: LVI
  • 67: LXVII
  • 70: LXX
  • 84: LXXXIV
  • 98: XCVIII
  • 112: CXII
  • 159: CLIX
  • 267: CCLXVII
  • 378: CCCLXXVIII
  • 414: CDXIV
  • 571: DLXXI
  • 655: DCLV
  • 780: DCCLXXX
  • 800: DCCC
  • 997: CMXCVII
  • 1235: MCCXXXV
  • 2782: MMDCCLXXXII
  • 3458: MMMCDLVIII
  • 3999: MMMCMXCIX

From this number, that is, from 4000, a line is written above the number that makes a thousand, that is, to write 4000 we would put IV with a line on top.
