The Statue of Liberty is the symbol of freedom and democracy. It is located at the entrance to the port of New York, United States, and is one of the best known monuments in the world.

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the United States on the occasion of the first centenary of the Declaration of Independence, signed on July 4, 1776 as a symbol of friendship Franco-American. It was inaugurated in 1886.

Freedom lighting up the world is the full and official name of the monument that took 11 years to build (between 1875 and 1886) under the Directed by the French-Swiss engineer Maurice Koechlin (1856-1946) and the French artist and architect Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904).

Among the architects who collaborated in the project are the French: Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923) and Eugène Viollet-le-Duc (1814-1879), as well as the American Richard Hunt (1827-1895).

Analysis of The Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty is made of copper and personifies 'Liberty', specifically political freedom. Liberty has a seven-pointed crown that represents the seven continents.

Freedom holds the following attributes:

  • In his right hand, a torch, symbol of freedom. The torch was covered in 24 karat gold sheets during its restoration in 1986;
  • In his left hand, 'Liberty' holds the boards representing the United States' declaration of independence. The tables are engraved with the date of the declaration in Roman numerals: July IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776).

The logistics to transport the statue from France to the United States, the budget and the decision of the city in which he was going to stay were big problems that had to be solved by the director of the Newspaper New York World, Joseph Pulitzer. It was he who encouraged New York readers to make donations, thanks to which he came to raise $ 120,000 in five months, just enough to pay for the statue's transfer to New York.

To visit the statue you must take a boat from lower Manhattan to Liberty Island.
