Types of determinative adjectives with examples

The determinative adjectives are, according to the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), "those whose basic function is to introduce the noun in the sentence and delimit its scope, stating which or how many of the entities designated by the name the speaker refers to: this car, Some friends, three days". This type of adjective receives this name in traditional grammar because its function is to identify the noun and narrow down its meaning, just as a determinant would. For this reason, determinative adjectives always agree in gender and number with the noun. In this lesson from a TEACHER we will study the types of determinative adjectives with examples.

Within the determinative adjectives we can find several different subtypes or categories depending on the type of determination they carry out with respect to the noun they accompany.

So, in this way, we divide the types of determinative adjectives as follows:

  • Articles: they can be well determined, which provide very specific information or indeterminate, which provide generic information. The determined items are:

the, while indeterminate articles are one, one, one, one.
  • Exclamatory: are those that are used in exclamatory sentences, which are always written between exclamation marks: How much money do you have!
  • Interrogatives: Unlike the previous ones, the interrogative determinative adjectives are those that appear in interrogative sentences or questions, accompanied by the corresponding question marks: How old are you?
  • Demonstrative: are the determinative adjectives that indicate the spatial-temporal proximity of the noun with respect to the person speaking and the rest of the participants in the discourse: This book is mine and that is yours.
  • Numerals: provide information related to the quantity of the noun: Two beers please. In this other lesson we will discover the types of numeral determinants.
  • Possessive: they indicate the belonging of the noun with respect to the speaker or the other interlocutors of the communicative situation: My car is better than our brother's. Here you will find more examples of possessive determiners in spanish.
