Word classes according to their meaning

In this video I will explain the types of words according to their meaning. Words according to their meaning can be classified or grouped.

The words according to their meaning can be classified on:

  • Synonym words: with the same or similar meaning.
  • antonym words: with opposite meaning.
  • monosemic words: with only one meaning.
  • polysemic words: with more than one meaning.
  • homonymous words:homographs (they are written and pronounced the same) and homophones (they are pronounced the same).
  • stop words: in the same way and different meaning.

The words according to their meaning can be grouped on:

  • semantic fields: set of words that are related to a topic.
  • Lexical fields: set of words also related by a topic but have common and uncommon features

In the video you can see examples of each of the word types and in the following videos we will treat each of these types individually.

Also, if you want to practice what you learned in today's lesson, you can do the printable exercises with their solutions that I have left you on the web.
