General characteristics of the Generation of 27.
The Generation of 27 is the name given to one of the great groups of Spanish writers
of all times. Some of the most important members of this set of men of letters are: Federico García Lorca, Rafael Alberti, Luis Cernuda, Vicente Alexandre, Dámaso Alonso, Jorge Guillén, Pedro Salinas or Gerardo Diego, among others. All these writers have in common that they related to each other both on an artistic and literary level; that is, they went to the same cafes to do literary gatherings, as staff, since most of them were close friends. Furthermore, these writers resorted to the revistas of the time, as the Western Magazine, created by José Ortega y Gasset, as a means of publicity and dissemination of his literary work, the vast majority in the form of poems.
The works of the Generation of 27 are characterized by the attempt to aesthetic renewal of poetry; that is to say, they collect the ancient precepts and unite them with the avant-garde and also surrealist movements. For this reason, they use the metaphor as the main literary resource and they focus on the human problems that the society of its time is going through.
In this other lesson from a TEACHER we discover you the most important authors of the Generation of 27.
First stage of the Generation of 27: until 1927.
In this first stage of the Generation of 27 we can observe a marked predominance of the callPure poetry; that is, that type of poetry with little rhetoric, without decorative elements, without signs of sentimentality, which follows in the wake of Juan Ramón Jiménez. Something that all the writers of '27 had in common is their admiration and predilection for the author of Platero and me.
Likewise, during the first stage of the Generation of '27 there was an attempt to recover the models of classical poetry formally, with authors as important as Luis de Góngora (well, we must not forget that, precisely the origin of this literary movement starts from a tribute to the Andalusian poet) as well as the typical structures of court poetry popular.
Second stage of the Generation of 27: from 1927 to the Civil War (1936)
This second stage of the Generation of '27 is characterized by the attempt to humanize poetry. To do this, the authors seek their own identity and, influenced by Pablo Neruda and his work Green horse for poetry, they try to rehumanize poetry and achieve impure poetry.
It is precisely during this second stage that one of the most important and influential artistic movements in Spanish literature develops: the surrealism. Hand in hand with surrealist aesthetics, the writers of the Generation of 27 discovered how to reflect the existential problems that affect being human, in addition to using poetry as a weapon of political and social protest, through which they could show their discontent with the society in which they lived.
All this driven by social events that shocked the Spanish population of those years, such as, for example, the beginning of the Civil War (1936-1939).
Third stage: after the Civil War.
Once the Civil War (1936-1939) ended, the third stage of the Generation of 27 begins, which involves the disintegration of this group of writers, before so united. Due to the war, the vast majority of authors had to go into exile, only Vicente Aleixandre, Dámaso Alonso and Gerardo Diego remained in Spain.
It was also at this time that the death of Lorca. The writers, being forced to leave, each of them began, in this third stage, a personal and poetic evolution different from the rest, since the characteristics of each writer were no longer the themselves.
During this third stage, the poetry of these authors is characterized by nostalgia for Spain, the lost homeland, as well as pain and abandonment, along with loneliness and the feeling of having lost a home.
