First, before exemplifying various sentences with certain items, let's find out what exactly we are talking about.

The definite or definite article in Castilian it is a element that determines the noun. So we find a total of five, which are: the, the, the, the and the. That is, a specific article is in charge of informing about the noun that it is associated with, remembering that it is already something or someone known.

If we go into detail about the specific article, we find that they are used in case of:

  • Have to use the singular masculine, for which we will use the article the. For example, the dog.
  • It will be used for the feminine singular Article the. An example is fruit.
  • In case of masculine plural, have the. For example, the glasses.
  • In the case of feminine plural, have the, and go as an example the friends.
  • Finally, we find the neutral item. In this case, the item is it, and a good example would be to say "The impossible, like the famous movie."

It is necessary to remember that in Spanish grammar you can never use a specific article to accompany a person's name. That is, although it is popularly used in speech, neither Pedro nor Juana should be written or pronounced. On the other hand, it is accepted for proper names that do not define people, such as the name of certain places that the article usually carries. This is the case of the Aneto or the Pyrenees.

There are also situations in which, although it should be, can be omitted. For example, for expressions like The apartment is sold, since it is accepted Apartment for sale.

In addition, the particular article may suffer some kind of contraction with another preposition, creating a different one, but equally accepted. As examples, we find "Al teatro" or "Del chico", among many others.

Differences between definite and indeterminate articles.

Also when we are going to construct sentences with certain articles, it is necessary to know how they differ from indeterminate. Let's see the main ones.

Although a determined article determines a noun, that is, the substantive and is known, in the case of indeterminate ones, the noun is unknown by the speaker. Thus, the indeterminate articles are: one, one, ones and ones.

That is, according to the meaning of the phrase, one type or another of article will have to be used. In the case of the indeterminates, we can observe how the meaning changes depending on whether it is used, or a certain one:

  • Your son is with my neighbor in THE room.
  • Your son is with my neighbor in ONE room.

We observe that we go from knowing which is the specific room, since it is substantiated, to not knowing in which of them the child could be.

We can verify in this case that we use a certain article when we already know something, such as the cat or the girl. However, when it is the first time we discover it, or we do not know what we are talking about exactly, we will use the expression a cat or a girl. Everything will depend on the context in which each action occurs.

In this other article we will discover what are the definite and indeterminate articles so you can better see the differences between the two.
