What is a rhythmic figure.

Music is made up not only of notes but also of silences. For both notes and rests there are set values to be able to write music. We know how long a note or rest should last in a measure thanks to the symbol in this figure.

The figures they are the basis of rhythm writing, which is the element of music that plays with time, not with pitch (as is the case with notes and pitches on the staff). We use this measure precisely for the duration of each figure, so we say that a figure X lasts “X times”. In order to read and write music, you need to memorize these symbols and the amount of times they last.

Types of musical figure: notes and silences.

As we have mentioned before, we have two basic shapes: the notes and the silences. Both the sounds and the absence of these are necessary to create dynamic and varied music. The notes are all those sounds that are written on the staff with a certain height and have a defined pitch (do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, si, do). On the other hand, silences are sound pauses or waiting bars, the absence of a note.

How to recognize and write musical figures.

The symbols of a note or rest have a defined anatomy that helps you identify them. The drawing consists of 3 parts in the case of the notes: cletter, stem and bracket. Depending on the shape of these parts, we recognize the figure and they do not necessarily have all 3. In the case of silences we have defined symbols that we must also learn to recognize.

The musical ligature.

The round lasts 4 times and that is usually the maximum duration of many works, since the 4/4 metric is one of the most frequently used (if you are curious about the metric or time signature, We also have an article for it!). In this case, when we want a note to last longer than the measure allows, we resort to using the musical ligature.

In writing the ligature is a curved line connecting two musical figures. When this happens, the duration of both figures is added. Ligature can be used with any combination of musical figures. In addition to being a tool for visual organization at times (to make reading easier), the main use of ligature is to join two notes that are in different measures. It is in this way that we manage to make a note last for a long time, for several measures.

Now that you know the musical figure of the round and the silence of round, among other knowledge, you can start practicing your musical reading and writing songs and works!
