Water is one of the most important elements on our planet. It is estimated that around a 71% of the area of the Earth is water, of which the majority is the salty water that we find in the oceans. This is why it is important to know the water around us, and especially the name of the oceans and seas that surround us. In this lesson from a TEACHER we are going to talk about the main oceans and seas of Europe, so that you can know the water that surrounds us.

To talk about the oceans and seas of Europe, we must first explain what Europe is, since without understanding its position on the planet it is difficult to locate the waters that surround this continent.

Europe is one of the six continents that exist on our planet. It is located North Africa and West Asia. Although sometimes it tends to unite Asia, using the term "Eurasia" to refer to the union of both continents.

Europe is made up of 50 countries, of which 43 are entirely European and 7 are Eurasian countries, that is, located in both Europe and Asia. In addition to the 50 countries, Europe has 6 dependencies and 8 unrecognized territories.

Europe has a total area of 10,530,751 km2, which makes it one of the smallest continents. Its population is 743,704,000, being one of the continents with the lowest number of inhabitants. On the other hand, its density is 70 inhabitants / km2, so it is one of the continents with the highest population density.

In this other lesson we will discover what are the major rivers of Europe.

In this “Oceans and Seas of Europe” lesson, the largest part is undoubtedly the seas. Europe is full of seas, some with very specific characteristics that make them unique. The seas of Europe are as follows:

  • Norwegian Sea: It is found off the coast of Norway and reaches the Faroe Islands and Iceland.
  • White sea: Located on the northwest coast of Russia. Due to the low temperatures, it is usually frozen.
  • Barents Sea: It is a sea located in the Arctic Sea, and that borders Norway and Russia.
  • Baltic Sea: It is an inland sea of northern Europe. It connects directly with the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. It is known to be one of the largest amber deposits in the world.
  • Sea of ireland: It is a small sea that separates the two main British Isles. It is connected to the Atlantic Ocean by the San Jorge and the North canals.
  • North Sea: It is a marginal sea located between the coasts of Denmark and Norway, those of the British Isles, and those of Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France.
  • English Channel: Connects the Atlantic Ocean with the North Sea. Separate France with Great Britain.
  • Caspian Sea: It is located between Europe and Asia.
  • Black Sea: It is a sea closed by Europe. It is located between Eastern Europe and Asia Minor.
  • Cantabrian Sea: It is the sea that bathes the north coast of Spain. It bathes 800 km of coastline, a part of the Spanish coast and another part of the French coast.

Mediterranean Sea

It is the sea located between Europe, Asia and Africa. It was the key to the development of many civilizations, and the center of the world for many centuries. Its great extension makes it divided into 4 seas:

  • Aegean Sea: The part of the Mediterranean between Greece and Turkey. It is a sea with a large number of islands, most of them Greek.
  • Tyrrhenian Sea: It is the part of the Mediterranean to the west of the Italian peninsula.
  • Adriatic sea: Separates the Italian peninsula from the Balkan peninsula.
  • Ionian sea: It is located south of the Adriatic Sea. It was the main one where the Greeks and Romans traded.
