What are the highest peaks in Spain
Spain is one of the most mountainous countries in Europe. Mountain systems occupy almost half of the Spanish soil, being an important part of the Hispanic landscape. In these mountain systems we can find numerous peaks, although none of them reaches a dangerous height. Due to the importance of the mountainous landscape for the Spanish country, today in this lesson from a PROFESSOR we are going to talk about what are the highest peaks in Spain.
To know the highest peaks in Spain, we must first know which are the Spanish systems in which they are located. The mountain ranges that make up the Spanish relief are as follows:
- Galaico Massif
- Montes de León
- Cantabrian Mountains
- Pyrenees
- Coastal-Catalan Mountain Ranges
- Iberian System
- Central Sistem
- Montes de Toledo
- Sierra Moreno
- Subbetic mountain range
- Penibetic Mountain Range
It is in these mountainous systems that the peaks that we are going to talk about are found. Some of these mountain ranges are characterized by having very high peaks, such as the Pyrenees or the Cordillera Penibética, which have the highest peaks in Spain.
In this other lesson we will discover the highest peaks in the world.
To continue with this lesson we are going to talk about the 5 highest mountains in the Spanish territory. These mountains are located especially in the Huesca part of the Pyrenees and in Granada, since between both locations they include 11 of the 12 highest mountains in our country.
The Spanish peaks are nothing compared to the high altitudes of the Asian mountains, or even of great European mountains like the Elbrús, but they are still beautiful places, receiving hundreds of tourist visits annually.
Teide
The highest peak in Spain, and the only one on the list of highest heights that is not found in the Iberian Peninsula. El Teide is a volcano located on the island of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, and whose height reaches 3718 meters above sea level, and 7500 meters from the depth of the sea. It is the highest peak in Spain, that of any island in the Atlantic Ocean, and the third volcano in the world.
El Teide is located in the Teide National Park, a place that has been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This makes the mountain one of the most visited places by tourists who go on vacation to the Canary Islands. Being the most visited park in all of Spain, and the second with the most visits from around the world.
Mulhacen
This mountain with 3478 meters high, located in the Cordillera Penibética in Granada, it is the second highest mountain in Spain and the highest in the Iberian Peninsula. Its name comes from Muley Hacen, a Granada king, who is said to have been buried in the mountain. This appears to be just a simple legend, as there have been numerous searches for the grave, but it has never been found.
The Mulhacen is the second most prominent peak in Western Europe, and 64 from around the world. It should be noted that Teide does not count geographically as a European mountain, but is considered African.
Aneto
It is the highest peak in the Pyrenees, with a height of 3404 meters above the sea level. It is located in Benasque, a town in the province of Huesca in the Autonomous Community of Aragon. It is part of the Posets-Maladeta natural park, which includes two of the highest massifs in the Pyrenees.
In one of its parts is the Aneto Glacier, the largest glacier in all the Pyrenees, with a surface area of 90 hectares. This glacier has been affected in recent years by climate change, losing a little more surface each year.
vane
This peak is located in Granada, and has a height of 3395 meters above sea level. It is located in the Cordillera Penibética, distributed between the Natural and National Parks of the Sierra Nevada massif. At this peak you will find the highest mountain pass in all of Europe, and a scientific observatory that is at its top.
Posets
The fifth highest mountain in Spain, with an altitude of 3375 meters above sea level. It is located in the province of Huesca, near the Aneto peak, forming part of the Pyrenees. It is the second highest mountain in the Pyrenees, being only surpassed by the Aneto.
