The life of Moses: from his birth to his death.

To know the story of Moses you have to know that his life is told in the Bible, more specifically in the Old Testament. His birth took place when an Egyptian pharaoh ordered all born Hebrew children to be killed, but not everyone heeded the pharaoh's orders. Moses was son of Amram and Yochebed and he had two brothers named Miriam and Aaron, both older than him.

Yochebed hid Moses for several months, to prevent Pharaoh's orders from being carried out, but there came a time when she could not hide him any longer. The mother of Moses

he placed him in a basket, with mud in an interior so that the water could not enter, and took it to the river Nile.

The basket was found by an Egyptian princess, who was convinced by Miriam that the baby was suckled by a Hebrew woman, who turned out to be Yochebed. After a few years taking care of Moses, he was returned to the Egyptian princess and was raised as one more son of the pharaoh, along with his brother, the future successor of the pharaoh.

Moses' life was quiet until he saw the work of the Hebrew slaves, at that time he killed an Egyptian foreman when he saw the brutality with which he treated the Hebrew slaves, after this Moses left Egypt during years.

What did Moses do? The 10 plagues of Egypt.

Moses' exile took him to Midian where he, after protecting a group of shepherds, he was welcomed by their father. Moisés became a shepherd, being the main person in charge of watching over the flocks in the area. Moses lived in Midian for forty years, marrying Sephora, one of the shepherds, and having a son named Gersón.

It was during this stage that Moses met God for the first time, encountering a bush that burned without being consumed. God, using the bush as a means of communication, entrusted a mission to Moses, which consisted of returning to Egypt and freeing the Hebrew people from slavery.

Moses returned to Egypt and, thanks to a display of some exploits, the Israelite people began to trust Moses as God's envoy. The greatest difficulty was convincing Pharaoh to let the slaves go, because of which Moses had to send 10 plagues to let them go. These 10 plagues were the following:

  • The water turns into blood.
  • Frogs
  • Lice
  • Flies
  • The plague against cattle
  • Ulcers
  • Hail and fire
  • Lobsters
  • Darkness
  • The death of all the firstborn

These pests they convinced the pharaoh that he should free the Hebrew slaves. But Pharaoh changed his mind when Moses and the Hebrew people had already fled, setting out with a large army to retrieve the slaves.

The Egyptian army caught up with the slaves near the Red Sea, but Moses, thanks to the help of God, separated the sea in two, the Hebrews passed by walking easily, but when trying to pass the Egyptians were massacred by the return of the sea to its bed.

Life in the desert and death of Moses.

To continue with this lesson on the summary of the history of Moses we must talk about the last years of Hebrew, all that stage that happens after the flight from Egypt and until arrival in the Promised Land.

Three months after the crossing in the desert Moses went up Mount Sinai, place where he received the tablets containing the 10 commandments, the basic laws of the Hebrew people. Moses was on the mountain for 40 days, and when he came down to give the scriptures to his people he discovered that the Hebrews had built a golden calf, which they revered. Moses went into a rage and destroyed the calf using the tables of commandments, breaking these as well.

After many years of crossing the Hebrews reached the Promised Land, called Palestine. A new generation of Hebrews entered his new home led by Joshua. But Moses could not enter this place, because he had disobeyed God at some point during his journey through the desert.

Moses he passed away at 120 years old, without being able to enter that land for him he had fought for so many years, but being a great hero for all subsequent Hebrews.

Moses and the 10 commandments.

We could not talk about the story of Moses without referring to one of the essential contributions that this biblical character gave to Christianity: the 10 commandments. These are also known as "The decalogue" and they are a series of ethical principles that are very relevant within Christianity and also Judaism. Here are some rules to follow, such as worshiping God, how to act in society, rules for practicing kindness, and so on.

In the Hebrew Bible, these 10 commandments appear twice: in the books of Exodus and Deuteronomy. As they tell in this book, God gave Moses two stone tablets on Mount Sinai containing the Ten Commandments; However, he ended up breaking them because when he went down to town he saw that the people were worshiping a golden calf. After this event, Moses apologized to God for the ignorance of the people and God forgave him by giving him other slabs of stone where these commandments should be written again.

Today, this Decalogue comes to us above all thanks to the teachings given in the catechism. At the moment, the Catholic Church promotes these 10 commandments:

  1. You will love God above all things.
  2. You will not take God's name in vain.
  3. You will sanctify the holidays.
  4. You will honor your father and mother.
  5. Thou shalt not kill.
  6. Thou shalt not commit impure acts.
  7. You will not steal.
  8. You will not give false testimonies or lie.
  9. You will not indulge in impure thoughts or desires.
  10. You shall not covet.
