Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) is probably the paradigm of a Renaissance artist, since he not only cultivated the arts but was also an exceptional engineer, scientist, mathematician, philosopher and inventor. Within his work as an inventor, he carried out a large number of designs and carried out studies on many topics. Next, in this lesson from unPROFESOR.com we are going to study the most important Leonardo da Vinci inventions.

Leonardo, ahead of his time.
Leonardo da Vinci he was truly ahead of his time designing artifacts that, while for the most part did not have a practical development in his time, with the passage of time and the development of technique and materials, have been pioneers of wits that today are a reality.
His contemporaries they considered him an engineer, since the technique and the investigation attracted him deeply. He made inventions in a number of fields, including the following: flying machines, musical instruments, war machines, water machines, cranes, etc.
In this other lesson we will discover the Da Vinci's summary biography.
Flying machines.
Among Leonardo da Vinci's most important inventions indeed flying machines stand out who were looking for one of the great dreams of the human being: to fly through the air. Da Vinci carried out studies on the flight of birds, specifically on their anatomy and how they used flapping wings. On these studies he made several prototypes of flapping wing flying machine, although by weight and power it was not an ingenuity with the possibility of making a flight.
Another interesting prototype was the propeller flying machine, which was based on flight using a helical screw system. This contraption had an enormous similarity to the current helicopter, but the lack of lightweight materials for its construction and a powerful energy source meant that it could not fly.
It can also be said that Da Vinci was the forerunner of parachute since he designed one with a pyramid shape and a square base, in order to be able to descend from flights in complete safety. He did not test the invention, but his own model of it was built later in the 20th century, giving it quite a bit of reliability.
We cannot forget, either, the artistic side of him, for that reason, in this other lesson we will discover the Da Vinci's main works of art.

Musical instruments.
Leonardo made innovative instruments for the court of Milan such as drums, flutes and the well-known paper pipe organ. The latter received the name in Italy of Organi di letter. Similar in appearance to the current accordion, with a vertical keyboard, it had a bellows and the already mentioned paper tubes.
He also made designs to carry out a water organ, with the use of the fall of the liquid on some glasses, but finally this project did not materialize.
War machines.
The Renaissance was a time of innovations but also of warlike conflicts, for which Leonardo carried out various designs and war machines. Made catapults and crossbow improvements, as well as in tanks and cannons.
Among these devices, the chariot, Of which he made two models: the first, very well armored, armed and fast, a clear predecessor of the current tanks; and a second, with rotating scythes to attack the infantry.

Aquatic machines.
In addition to wanting to fly through the air, Leonardo had a special interest in improving water travel. Among his designs, stands out the paddle boat, faithful predecessor of the ships that crossed the Mississippi River in the 19th century. This was propelled through blades driven by a large toothed wheel, geared to a smaller one.
He also made designs to be able to move in the water, as is the case with the diving bell with two tubes, fins, with designs inspired by those of fish, and a submarine. Of the latter, he carried out a design that was not very functional but theoretically valid.
Civil Engineering.
Da Vinci also worked on inventions to improve civil engineeringfrom innovative bridges to cranes and elevators.
Inside the cranes, she made three types of design: gear and screw, to move large weights through the gear of a worm; of pulleys, with eight of them to support more load; and jibs, which, similar to current tower cranes, through the use of screws with weights and counterweights, could be used to lift large buildings.
