In the first document relating to these paintings, the date of 1483 appears and it stipulated that it was what should be represented, the Immaculate Conception with the child and two angels, the measurements, the price, 800 lire paid in installments and the date for when they should be finished, 1485. However, a dispute over the price, for which Leonardo asked for the amount of 1200 pounds caused the process to be delayed, concluding the work in the year 1508.

In 2005 it was discovered thanks to the infrared system that under the version of The Virgin of the Rocksfound in the National Gallery, there is a drawing in which, according to researchers on the subject, it seems that what Leonardo wanted to represent was the Adoration of the Child Jesus.

In this other lesson you will discover a summary of the biography of Leonardo Da Vinci.

Vitruvian Man (1490)

We have to say that the Vitruvian man It is not a pictorial work itself, since it is a drawing but its importance is vital since it was this one of the greatest achievements of the Renaissance.

In the drawing what is represented are the ideal physical proportions of the human being according to Leonardo da Vinci. On a paper no more than 34.4 cm × 25.5 cm and painted with pen and ink, it represents a male figure, naked, in two positions inscribed in turn in a circle and a square. In the upper and lower part where the idyllic measurements appear, inspired by some texts on architecture that Marco Vitruvio made in the 1st century BC. C.

Until 1815 it belonged to the collection of the painter and writer Giuseppe Bossi to later be bought at an auction house by Luigi Celotti and since 1822 that it was acquired by the Gallery of the Academy of Venice, it is exhibited in this space, although to the public, for reasons of conservation, once every ten years.

The Last Supper (1498)

Another of Leonardo da Vinci's major works of art is The Last Supper. This is a mural painting made in tempera and in oil on two layers of plaster that had previously been given on the plaster itself of the wall, for the refectory of the Dominican convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, in Milan (Italy), which since 1980 has been declared a World Heritage Site Humanity.

It is one of the most visited monuments in the city, not only for its architectural appeal but also for observing one of the largest paintings made by Leonardo da Vinci, since we are talking about it being almost 9 meters long by 4.60 wide.

The painting was executed between the years 1495 - 1497 and was commissioned by Duke Ludovico Sforza of Milan, in it what represented is the biblical scene in which Jesus is reunited with all his apostles before his death.

At present, we have to say that the passage of the years has made this paint has visibly deteriorated, because the fact of using oil on the dry plaster has caused the opening of cracks and detachment, hence the visits are by reservation and in very small groups.

The Mona Lisa (1503)

Many are surprised to visit the Mona Lisa or also known as the Mona Lisa, in the Louvre Museum waiting for it to be larger. And it is that this oil on board does not measure more than 77 x 53 cm.

It is a table, in addition, it is constantly being revised to prevent deterioration over the years since the darkening of the varnishes is perceptible, hence it is set with the ideal temperature for its conservation, so the color we see is not the original. The fact that it was stolen in 1911 also means that it is protected by various security systems.

The real importance lies in the Leonardo's new insight on how to represent depth using the technique of sfumato. She, the androgynous woman with an enigmatic smile, her identity is unknown, although the most accepted thesis is that she was Francesco del Giocondo's wife, hence Gioconda, whose name was Lisa Gherardini, hence Mona (lady in Italian) Lisa

Leonardo kept her until practically the end of her days, until she was acquired by the King. Francisco I of France in the 16th century and, since then, it is one of the greatest treasures that the State has French.

A painting that, as you may have seen, is about one of the most inspiring and parodied thus making it one of the most famous paintings in the world.

Saint John the Baptist (1513)

The painting of Saint John the Baptist is one of the last works made by Leonardo and which, like the previous one, is on display in the Louvre Museum (France). It is an oil painting on panel and its measurements are 69 cm high by 57 wide.

What in it represented is Saint John the Baptist in the middle of a morbid shadow. His curly hair suggests that the chosen model was one of his disciples Salai of his, and while in his left hand he holds a reed cross, with the right point to the sky, a fact that has often been debated as to what he is really pointing to. According to experts, it suggests the importance of salvation through baptism.

Also, and like the Mona Lisa, it is another of the paintings that has caused the most debates for that smile similar to the Mona Lisa, as well as for its androgynous nature.
