Throughout the history of America there are many politicians whose thoughts have been vital to the evolution of the revolutionary ideas, being many of these personages those that influenced in the appearance of the new American states. One of the politicians whose ideas were most important for the Latin American revolutions was Simón Bolívar, and that is why in this lesson from a PROFESSOR we are going to talk about the Simón Bolívar's most important thoughts.

Before talking about Bolívar's ideas and his subsequent influence, we must briefly talk about his biography, already that it is important to know the different facts and events in which he participated in order to better understand his ideas.

Simon Bolivar was born in the Venezuelan city of Caracas on July 24, 1783, being the son of a family of the American upper class. Soon his life was turned upside down, when at the early age of two his father died of tuberculosis, although that did not prevent Bolívar from having a great education, especially in terms of philosophical and politicians.

Growing up he lived in Spain for a few years, where he studied the various liberal ideas that were beginning to appear throughout Europe. Years later he returned to Venezuela where he took an oath on Monte Sacro, promising that he would not stop until all of America was totally free. From that moment until his death, Simón Bolívar he fought for independence, being the liberal ideas of him vital for the change of thought of the Americans.

After the Napoleonic invasion of Spain, Bolívar and other American leaders traveled to London, convincing Francisco de Miranda to be the president of the new Republic. This government lasted very little, being quickly defeated by the royalists, and thus causing Bolívar to retreat to Cartagena, where he was proclaimed Liberator and where he proclaimed war to the death and shortly after the Second Republic.

The Second Republic was not long lasting and Bolívar had to flee to Jamaica, where he wrote his letter to Jamaica. Two years later Bolívar founded and was appointed president of Gran Colombia, achieving first the independence of Colombia and two years later that of Venezuela.

After resign her position as political leader of Colombia Simón Bolívar retired to Santa Marta, where he finally passed away on December 17, 1830.

  • All the new Spanish-American states that were being formed were to be based on the democracy.
  • Power is born from National sovereignty, all social classes having the same equal value.
  • Bolívar believed that the only way to confront the great world powers was the union of the entire American world. Bolívar believed that there was a series of American states marked by a common ideology, and that the best way to stay was his union in a single American town, being one of the ideas that he never managed to realize.
  • Bolívar considered that power should not be unitary, considering vital the division of powers in politics.
  • Bolívar considered that the alternation in power, being unfeasible the government of the same person for decades, being vital for a democracy the rotation of political figures.
  • He considered that the government could not be the same for all states, as it should reflect the society of the region.

The ideas of the so-called Bolivarianism have had a special influence on the so-called Bolivarian states, being those states that became independent and formed governments from the ideas of Simón Bolívar, being Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador.

In general, Bolivarianism has been used by the leftist Marxist governments of some Latin American states, being common elements of these their patriotic ideas, the government based on the republic and the economic theories of socialism.
