How to get the AREA out of a SQUARE
In this new lesson that we bring you from a Teacher you will be able to learn how to find the area of a squareKnowledge that is fundamental and basic to start in geometry and mathematics in general. To consolidate knowledge, we will start by defining what the area is and what figure is a square, to later explain how the area is calculated in this case. At the end of the article you will also find an exercise with its solutions.
The area is the calculation that allows know the space that occupies a given polygon. As in today's article we are studying the area of a square, we will be quantifying the space that square occupies.
As you probably already know, a square it's a regular polygon from four sides and four angles that measure the same. It is one of the figures that is first learned in schools, since we can find it in everyday life: in the shape of napkins, on the lid of a box, on a dice from a board game ...
The first thing to keep in mind is that to get the area of any polygon, the units
in which the data is provided they must match. That is, if one side is given in meters and the other in centimeters, we will have to unify it to be able to calculate the area, either by passing centimeters to meters, or by passing meters to centimeters.On the other hand, once we have calculated the area, we must remember that the result must always be provided in squared units, so if we are given the data in centimeters, the area will be in centimeters squared.
Once all this is clarified, we are going to see how to find the area of a square. The formula that we will use will be the following:
A = c2 = c * c
Where A is the area and c is the side.
In short, to calculate the area of a square, all you have to do is raise what the side squared measures, or what is the same, multiply side by side.
Example
With that said, let's see a example of calculating the area of a square:
- We have a pool with a square surface to which we want to put a cloth that covers it so that we do not get tree leaves. The side of the pool is 5 meters. How many square meters of fabric do we need?
Following the formula: A = c2 = c * c; since our side is 5, we just have to square 5 = 52 = 5 * 5 = 25 meters2.
We have already reached the end of the lesson and we are going to check how it went and if you have acquired the knowledge that has been explained. The solutions to the previous exercises are:
1. Since it asks us how many square meters we need, it is asking us for the area. To calculate the area of a square we use the formula A = c2 = c * c; as the side makes 7 meters: A = 72 = 7 * 7 = 49, so the answer is that we need 49 m2 of cardboard.
2. Following the formula A = c2 = c * c = 2 * 2 = 4 m2. That is, the area is four square meters.
3. In this case, they already provide us with the area, but they ask us for the side. As we already know, the area is obtained by multiplying one side by itself, so we have to find a number that multiplied by itself gives 25. That number, if we go testing, we realize that it is 5, so the square has a side of 5 meters.
