The science tree introduces us to Andrés Hurtado, a young boy from Madrid who is studying medicine at the university at the end of the 19th century, is the main conductor of the work of Pío Baroja. It is through this character that

His friends from the Montaner University and Julio are well aware of the disappointment that Andrés has grown in about university life and, more especially, in relation to study of medicine. Julio Aracil, one of his college classmates and friend, will introduce Andrés to Lulú, a girl who is not very attractive to the protagonist, but who belongs to a wealthy family.

After finishing the race, Andrés learns that his brother Luisito has been diagnosed with tuberculosis and decides to travel with him to Valencia, to see if it improves. After some time and already in Burgos preparing his doctoral studies, Andrés is informed that Luisito has passed away.

It is at this moment when, as we anticipated, the figure of his uncle Iturrioz. With him you will discuss philosophical themes of life, science conceiving the protagonist as an instrument that guides people through life, reigning over everything else.

Conversations travel between literary referents of both characters, such as Don Juan Tenorio or Don Quijote de la Mancha. Introduced by all these ideals we see the ideas of Schopenhauer and Kant, in addition to the theories they formulate about the tree of life and the tree of science, which gives the book its name. This is the most important moment of the whole novel, where meaning is given to the name of the book and to the ideals that he intends to convey.
