+50 EXAMPLES of GERUNDIO in Spanish
We have previously seen the use of gerunds and their formation. In summary, Spanish verbs make up a complex conglomerate in ways that are very difficult to access as a foreign language. This language has a good number of verb tenses, which depend on three conjugations, in addition to an endless number of verbal irregularities. However, there are some verb forms that are invariable in their formation.
One of these verb forms of which we speak would be the gerund. Knowing its importance and, as in many cases, the possible difficulties that may arise when understanding its use, in a Teacher we are going to see a series of gerund examples accompanied by an explanation of this verbal formation. What is the gerund?
The gerund is a verb, that is, a unconjugated form of the verb lacking the traits of time, gender, or number in its morphological formation. In the same way that we classify the gerund as a verb, the infinitives and participles would also be part of this nature. Therefore, as is the case with
infinitives and participles, gerunds are not conjugated, but always appear in the same way. Moreover, these gerunds are impersonal forms of the verb and their main function would be to indicate that an action is happening or that it is being carried out.As we will see below, on many occasions these verbs act as adverbs. However, and related to what we have been developing so far, the most normal thing will be to come across the gerunds forming part of a verbal periphrase (formations composed of two or more verbs acting as one) when the gerund acts as verb. However, in these periphrasis we will never see it as the main verb.
Therefore, and moving on to the morphological formation of the gerund itself, we must emphasize the fact that all they, regardless of the conjugation to which the verb formed in gerund belongs, are suffixed with the particle -ing. Thus, the gerund of to love would loving, that of to drink would drinking and that of feel would feeling.
However, it is also said that this suffix -ing should be divided into two main types depending on the three conjugations: -ando for the first (verbs ending in -ar) and -going for the second (verbs ending in -er) and third (those that end in -to go). In addition, there are those who include a third form for some specific verbs such as hear, to go or replace (there are some more), which would be -going (hearing, going or substituting). Well, let's put everything we have learned so far into practice and analyze a series of examples of the gerund.
Examples of gerund in verbal periphrasis.
We already saw in a previous article the division of the use of the gerund and the ways in which we can find it. However, in the present work we will draw on the classification we made in that article to classify the examples that we will develop. So we start with the gerund within the verbal periphrasis classified according to their accompanying auxiliary verb:
Finish + gerund
This periphrasis refers to an effect that occurs after a time, whether determined or indeterminate. The most common to see the auxiliary verb finish, in this case, conjugated in the past tense, although we can also see it in the future:

In these cases, of course, we will see the auxiliary to be in present. On the other hand, we can also find it in the past with a similar nature, but in reference to past actions with progressive value that have already ended a long time ago:
