The states of matter and their changes
Learn about states of matter and their changes with this dynamic lesson from a TEACHER on this topic. Matter is everything that occupies space and has mass. Thus, the states of matter are the different forms in which we can find it in our environment. We can say that they exist three states of matter on our planet and a fourth state of matter found in space. Did you know that water is the only substance that we know of that is naturally in the three main states of matter? For example, we can find it in a liquid state, in rivers, seas and when we drink it, as well as in a solid state, in glaciers of the cold popsicles or in the ice cubes that we keep in the freezer, and in the gaseous state, in the clouds and in the water vapor that comes out of some factories.
Let's see the definitions of the states of matter in a simple way:
- The liquid state of matter: it has an indefinite volume and shape, since its molecules are more separated and looser than in the solid state. An example is the water that we pass from a bottle to a glass, it flows, changes its shape and adjusts to the container.
- The solid state of matter: it has a defined shape, resists change in shape and does not fit into the space in which it is located. Its molecules are in much more fixed positions. A simple example is ice, you can put it in a glass and it will not conform to its shape.
- The gaseous state of matter: In this state there is no volume or proper form, the molecules of matter in this state are in constant motion and fill the space and volume of the container that contains them. An example is oxygen, which can be contained in cylinders like those used by divers to breathe.
- The plasmatic state of matter: plasma is known as the 4th state of matter. Matter in this state is present in the Sun and other stars, but also in the magnetosphere and ionosphere.
