The breathing It is a more or less involuntary act that we all carry out continuously, in a way automatic and involuntary. If you have ever practiced sports or any of the most common yoga or meditation techniques, you will have realized the importance of maintaining adequate breathing but, What types of human respiration exist? In this lesson from a TEACHER we will review the most common forms of breathing such as abdominal, costal or clavicle but also others less known such as sigh breathing or Cheyne-Stokes.

Abdominal breathing

One of the types of human respiration is abdominal breathing which, in fact, is the most common, especially when we are relaxed, lying down, etc. Abdominal breathing occurs when breathing occurs when the diaphragm and the abdomen swells. Despite what it may seem, swelling in the abdomen is a consequence of air entering the lungs, not the cause.

To carry out this breathing we can perform two easy steps:

  1. Breathe out several times, trying to run out of air in your lungs. Ejecting everything making a contraction gesture of the abdomen and try to keep them empty for a few seconds holding your breath.
  2. Perform slow, long and deep exhalations. For a few minutes, try to concentrate on the movement of the diaphragm, taking slow and deep exhalations, as quietly as possible.

If you can't get a deep abdominal breath by following these steps, you can help yourself with the word OM. The articulation of this word during each breath can help you focus and relax. In a slow, relaxed and gentle way, he will first say the vowel OOOOOO …… and at the end of the breath: MMMM. In this other lesson we will discover the different phases of respiration so that you know how our respiratory system.

Rib breathing.

Rib breathing is another of the most common types of human breathing. It is a typical breath of when we are tired, weary, people with disabilities or even pregnant women in an advanced stage of pregnancy.

This breathing consists of filling the middle region of the rib cage inspiring and expanding our thorax. Unlike abdominal breathing, in this case what expands is not the abdomen but the rib cage. It depends on the work of the external intercostal muscles more than the work of the diaphragm.

To practice costal or intercostal breathing, we must follow the following steps:

  1. Keep the abdomen contracted. If we keep the abdomen contracted, we will prevent the diaphragm from moving and we will begin to do abdominal breathing.
  2. Breathe in slowly, concentrating on the movement of our ribs. We will concentrate on trying to separate the ribs with the air we take. Keep in mind that we will have to make a greater effort to take in air than with abdominal breathing.

Clavicular breathing.

Clavicular breathing is one of the ways less common breathing and usually occurs in people or situations of anxiety, nervous tension, etc. Unlike the previous ones, clavicular breathing is one in which inspiration is concentrated in the upper part of the lungs. Therefore, the volume of air that can enter the lungs is the smallest of the three types of respiration. This type of breathing is highly ineffective and gives a very unpleasant choking sensation.

To practice clavicular breathing, which is the most difficult of the three types, we must keep both the abdominal muscles and the rib cage locked. Once blocked, we must take small amounts of air with the part that is between the two clavicles.

Other types of human respiration.

There are other less common types of human respiration since they occur in very specific situations, pathologies or diseases. Some examples are:

  • Night apneas. Night apneas are a fairly common type of human respiration, especially in obese, hypertensive and / or smokers. It is characterized by deep breaths, with loud and irregular snoring, interrupted by more or less long periods of suspension of breath. These episodes of nocturnal apnea can cause increased sweating, awakenings with a sensation of dyspnea (shortness of breath), palpitations, or dry mouth on waking.
  • Cheyne-Stokes respiration: Cheyne-Stokes respiration occurs in patients with heart failure, for example. It is that irregular breathing in which the respiratory movements become progressively more frequent and deeper; then alternate with shallow and less frequent movements. Sometimes there may even be moments with pauses in breathing, in which the patient has a sensation of "blockage" of the lungs.
  • Biot respiration: It is a rare type of breathing that occurs when there is brain damage. It is characterized by rapid and shallow irregular breathing with prolonged periods of shortness of breath of about 10 to 30 seconds.
  • Sighing breath. It is a type of human breathing typical of anxiety situations, in which a shallow breath is interrupted by deep inspiration. Isolated deep breaths and breaths occur between normal inspirations, often with an audible sigh. It is the one similar to a "fish out of water", with deep mouths of air.
