When grave words are accentuated.

The serious words are also known as plain words and are characterized by having the accent on the penultimate of the word, such as "mouthgavello". The syllable "di" is the one with the strongest voice punch when we pronounce the word.

That the stress of a word is on a specific syllable, in this case the penultimate, does not necessarily mean that it has an accent. But

graphic accentuation It has to do with very strict rules of the Spanish language.

Serious words will only be accented if they do not end in n, s and vowel.

  • For example, the word "tomato" will not be accented because YES ending in e, s or vowel. In this case it ends with the letter "e"
  • Another example is the word "character" which is accented because NOT ends in n, s or vowel. In this case it ends with the letter "r".

Exceptions that prove the rule

They exist only two exceptions in which serious words will not be accentuated following the rules that we have just taught you.

1- All those plain words that end in "s" will have an accent mark, as long as the letter before it is a consonant.

Some examples of this exception are the following:

  • Afirkaans
  • biceps
  • triceps
  • clarens
  • forceps
  • masters
  • princes

2- The second exception It has to do with the vowels that make up the word. All those serious words that contain a hiatus from open vowel to close vowel on the strong syllable. That is, if you find a hiatus in the strong syllable of the word grave, the first thing you should check is if it is formed by an open vowel and followed by a closed vowel.

In case the closed vowel is the strong one, this plain word will accentuate, although it does not follow the general rules of spelling.
