5 works by Lasar Segall to know or artist

Lasar Segall was a very important artist for the history of Brazilian art. Born in Lithuania on July 21, 1889, he moved to Brazil in 1923 and continued his career in the plastic arts here.

Directly influenced by the European avant-garde, Segall built a consistent work on modern art. Boa part of his works can be seen not Lasar Segall Museum, institution that one day was the home of the artist in the city of São Paulo.

To know more about his trajectory and the whole of his work, we highlight some works.

1. Homem with violin (1909)

This is a job done with the oil on paper technique, its dimensions are 71 x 51 cm.

Integrating the collection of the Museu Lasar Segall, the painting exhibits impressionistic features, since he was still in 1909, he did not start his career.

This period he lived in Germany, then he moved from Lithuania to only German in 1906, when he entered the Berlin Academy. At the end of the 10th decade, his paintings by him still exhibit elements typical of his Jewish culture and origin, with many interiors and human figures.

2. I find (1924)

This fabric, made in 1924, is the phase in which Segall was living in Brazil for a short time. He married Margarete, his first (German) wife, and together they went to Brazil.

A painting and a portrait of the house and exhibits the sentiment of the painter of belonging and accommodation in our lands, while his wife seems upset.

Indeed, Lasar Segall was amazed at the light and the tropical climate, and portrays himself as a typically brazilian figure. Já Margarete did not adapt and her marriage ended when she decided to return to her country.

The 66 x 54 cm frame can be seen at the Museu Lasar Segall.

3. Bananal (1927)

Made in 1927, Bananal evidence to figure of black powder and worker. The character is placed in the center of the composition and presents features that are marked, in modernist traces that refer to cubism.

The banana plantation on the farm takes all or the rest of the fabric and contrasts with the cores of the human figure.

This is one of the most well-known modernist paintings by Lasar Segall and is part of the collection of the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo.

4. Family of the painter (1931)

After he separated from Margarete, Lasar Segall married Brazilian Jenny Klabin. In 1928 they moved to Paris as the son of Maurício. Lá, Jenny gives birth to the second son of the couple, Oscar. The family stays in France for four years and after that they return to Brazil.

A painting in a questão portrays the wife and the two children in a domestic environment. This is a phase in which Segall turns to more intimate topics, like maternity, family life and landscapes.

5. Emigrant Ship (1939-41)

In 1932 the painter returned to Brazil and fixed residence in São Paulo. He is going to live in a house designed by Gregori Warchavchik, a modernist architect.

From then on, it turns again to important topics of the Brazilian reality and to events of enormous relevance in the world.

One of his most famous works is painting Emigrant Ship, completed in 1941. A cloth portrays hard journey of thousands of people who left their countries in the context of World War II.

In the work we can see the importance of the design, the perspective and the use of the cores. The work has dimensions of 230 x 275 cm and belongs to the Museu Lasar Segall.
