Area and perimeter of a square

As the title of this lesson from a TEACHER points out, we are going to explain how to calculate the area and perimeter of a square. It is a fundamental aspect within mathematics; however, as you will see after playing the video, it is a fairly simple operation. In the first place, it is very important to remember two elementary concepts: what is the area and the perimeter, in order to later carry out the calculation with some examples. We started!

We will begin by commenting that it is the area of a square. The area in a polygon is the surface that it covers, that is, the area is the entire interior of the figure which is made up of its sides, since the area is the entire surface that these sides enclose, as the teacher explains very well in the following video about this subject.

More specifically, and for theoretical purposes, we can affirm then that area is a metric concept which assigns a measure to the extent of a surface, expressed in mathematics as units of measure. Therefore, area is a metric concept that requires to be expressed in

a measure of length. For example: centimeters (cms), kilometers (kms), millimeters, etc.

On the other hand, the second concept that we must remember is that of perimeter. In this case, the perimeter becomes the outline of the figure in question. As the teacher says, the perimeter is the sum of the lines that make up the geometric figure; that is, the sum of all the sides of the figure.

Likewise, the perimeter can be defined as the distance around a two-dimensional (or two-dimensional) figure, the measurement of the distance around something, or it can even be summarized in the length of the border that makes up a figure geometric.

Once, having seen the elementary theoretical concepts, we are going to continue with the most practical and entertaining part of this lesson, and in the next section we will see, in which way the area and the perimeter of a geometric figure (in this case the square) are obtained, how they should be expressed in their respective units of measurement, which is the formula for the area of a square and as is customary for us in a TEACHER, we are going to provide you with some examples so that the learning process is much more bearable.

Having said this, and already entering the subject, the teacher comments that it must be taken into account, to calculate the area of a polygon we must know the formula of the same, since it changes depending on the figure that we are calculating. In this case, we propose the figure of the square, in which lthe formula for your area it is:

  • A (square) = L x L (where L = side)

In the example given, they provide us with a 14 cm square per side. We know that the square has all its sides equal, so in this case, the operation becomes even easier to calculate.

Likewise, it is very important to remember that when calculating an area, the result will always be expressed in the unit of measurement that has been set but squared. Therefore, in this particular operation, the area must be expressed in cm2 (squared).

That said, we proceed to calculate the area of the square in question, which would be as follows:

  • A = L x L
  • A = 14 x 14 = 196 cm2 (remember to always express the result in the unit of measurement indicated and place it squared)

196 cm2 is the area of the square proposed in the video. The teacher develops the multiplication in the video of this topic.

Calculate the perimeter of the square

Once the area has been calculated, the perimeter of the square is calculated. In this case, since it is a square, we have two ways to calculate its perimeter: add its four sides (L + L + L + L = 14 + 14 + 14 + 14) or, a simpler option which is multiply one side by 4, since these are the same.

In the video, the teacher opts for the most logical and simple option, which is multiplication, so the perimeter calculation would be as follows:

  • P = L x 4
  • P = 14 x 4 = 56 cm

As a reminder, it is important to note that in the case of the unit of measure in the perimeter, the we write without exponent, since it is a linear measure.

Having stated the above, the objective of this lesson from a TEACHER has been presented in a simple way, and as always We encourage you to consult our educational website to solve any questions you have, with this or other content educational.
