Everything in Every Place at the Same Time: summary and meaning of the film

Great winner of the Oscar of 2023, Tudo em Todo Lugar ao Mesmo Tempo (Everything Everywhere All at Once, originally) is a film idealized by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, a duo made by "the Daniels".

The production stood out, gaining the attention and appreciation of critics and the public, due to its fantastic, absurd, multifaceted character and, at the same time, dramatic and existentialist.

Summary of the film

Evelyn Wang (played beautifully by michelle yeoh) is a Chinese immigrant who lives with her family in the USA and runs a laundry. Extremely frustrated, she fails to see beauty and meaning in her life.

A daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu) and husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan) We feel contempt for Evelyn, who also needs to deal with the bandage of her father Gong Gong (

As well as the protagonist, the public is also swallowed up and embarks on this adventure of action, scientific fiction, irony, comedy and drama.

Evelyn goes on to access the possibilities of what would be in her life if she had made other choices not past. Likewise, she simultaneously experiences all the feelings and abilities of other versions of herself in parallel universes. Lyrical singer, movie star, martial arts fighter and chef de cozinha are some of the people that Evelyn assumes in other lives.

Now the protagonist has a mission, to prevent Jobu Tupaki from annihilating the multiple universes. The village built a black hole in the shape of a donut capable of absorbing all light and matter.

The attack becomes even more interesting, because Jobu is, in reality, Joy, Evelyn's daughter. These are two elements that transform the plot into something other than mere empty scientific fiction and elevate the narrative to the patamar of family drama.

Evelyn's challenge will be to save daughter Joy as she faces her opponent and discovers the meaning of life.

Meanings and comments about the film

With a hallucinated plot, taking creativity to the extreme, Everything in Every Place at the Same Time does just the title, offering the viewer a cathartic, playful and reflective experience.

Using imagination and surrealism, we daniels draw an inverse sense to what is expected to deal with topics common to humanity, such as anguish, Frustration and the feeling that if we made the "better" choices we would find more satisfaction and plenitude.

Here, the protagonist needs to go through all the infinite possibilities of existence to value his family and the relationships that he built, thus acquiring a greater awareness of what is really important in his working day.

Curiosities about the film

There are some interesting elements in the work that can go unnoticed.

For example, the plastic ears that recur throughout the film are in contrast to Jobu Tupaki's donut. While the eyes are white circles with a black center, the donut is a black circle with a white center.

The choice of these elements refers directly to the symbol of Yin Yang present in Chinese culture and representing the complementary opposites of the universe.

Another curiosity is the presence of um "easter egg", or see, a clue hidden in the montage of the film. It is during one of two dinners of frantic transition of the face of the protagonist that we see in a fraction of seconds the image of the long-running editing team in an online meeting.
