Before starting to analyze the characters of Blood Wedding it is important that we contextualize this work, therefore, here we will do a short summary of Blood Wedding that will allow you to remember the plot and plot of this play.

Blood wedding is a tragic love story that presents us with an impossible relationship between members of two rival families. The mother of the groom is a woman who has a great grudge because the Felix family was responsible for the death of her husband and her son is about to of marrying a girl who does not end up to her liking, however, she accepts her infatuation and acts so that the wedding is celebrated as long as before.

The reason why her mother does not finish convincing her future girlfriend is that she, this, she was 3 years of courtship with Leonardo, a member of the Felix. The love trio will soon appear and Leonardo will visit her ex-girlfriend to congratulate her on her imminent wedding, but at that moment, he will discover that he is still in love with her. The girl, confused by this torrent of feelings, doubts her marriage but, in the end, she will end up giving in and marry her boyfriend.

During the wedding celebration, after the banquet, the bride goes to rest in a room because she is not quite well. But her absence lasts too long and, in the end, when they go to the room they will see that the woman has disappeared and she has fled with Leonardo, his old boyfriend.

The boyfriend, humiliated and in pain, goes after them and, therefore, goes into the interior of the forest since it is the path they have taken to escape. But it will be in the forest when his boyfriend and his servant meet a beggar woman who, in reality, will be death. And this character is the omen that announces what will happen: Leonardo and the groom end up engaging in a fight that will end the lives of both.

After this tragic event, the bride will go to the groom's mother's house to tell her what happened and, this, Although he will initially reject her, after she will have compassion on her because he is crying out for her to die of her. In the end, the mother will let the bride into her house and they will end up crying and comforting each other.

In order to address the analysis of the characters in Blood Wedding it is important that we bear in mind that, in this work, Lorca gives a universal character to the work and therefore all the characters are nameless (except Leonardo). Therefore, we are faced with characters who they are prototypes of personalities that are part of our society. These types can be summarized in three:

The mother of the groom, the protagonist

This character is the one who embodies the more conventional and traditional people. He is moved by the feeling of honor and honor and wants, above all, to keep up appearances before others. The wedding of his son is seen as an opportunity to enhance his presence in society and to show that they are an upright Christian family. She plays the role of a mother who would give everything for her children and that she is very wise, in fact, her voice many times she can be considered as an oracle because she gives life sentences that, later, are fulfilled with destiny.

The boyfriend

He is the son of the mother and, as such, has been raised in an environment where cordial and correct acts prevail. He presents himself as a good man who is simply in love with his girlfriend and therefore asks her to marry him. Girlfriend

He is one of the most interesting characters and protagonists of Blood Wedding. And it is that, although she does not want to marry, she ends up accepting the proposal due to social pressure and conventionalism. However, in the end he will be carried away by his passion and his own emotions, something that will make him break the rules and act in an inappropriate way. Therefore, the character of the bride is the one who embodies the rebelliousness of women within society and defends free will and freedom.

Leonardo

Another of the most important Blood Wedding characters is Leonardo and, in fact, he is the only one in the entire work that has its own name. It is a character who is presented as a tragic hero and that she breaks social conventions to satisfy her own desire and his passion. This character appears in the play presenting himself as a negative character, a family member accused of a death. However, his love and passion will make her break with her own marriage to embark on a loving journey that, unknowingly, will be the path to his own death. The fact that he has a name means that Leonardo is not for Lorca a prototype character but rather a fictional character with a past, a life and a specific psychology.

We must not forget that Lorca is a very symbolic author and, in this case, the character of the moon appears in the work to refer to the fact that death is always present. The light of the moon is the cause of the lovers being discovered in the forest during their flight and, therefore, the cause of the terrible ending.

The beggar or death

The appearance of the beggar is the appearance of death. She is the one who helps the denouement to take place since she informs the boyfriend of the whereabouts of her lovers. In addition, she acts as the messenger of the tragedy and will end up launching a judgment on the acts of human beings. She appears as a beggar woman, with bare feet and will be the character that will accompany the groom to discover the bride in the act of running away from her.
