"Crime and Punishment" is a novel written by the author Fyodor Dostoyevsky first published in 1866 in the magazine "The Russian messenger". First part of Crime and Punishment.

We begin this summary of Crime and Punishment by analyzing the first part of the work. We will study each chapter so that you know better the story that is hidden here.

Chapter I

Raskolnikov he is a frustrated young student because he must leave his studies of law due to serious economic problems, which will lead to going into debt with his landlady. In this first chapter, the protagonist will visit his landlady, Aliona ivanovna, to pawn his objects and get some money. When he leaves it, the young man goes to a bar to have a drink while he does not stop thinking about the large amount of money that his landlady has and where he can keep it. The reader will discover in this chapter that the old woman is an old calculator and very careful.

Chapter II

At the tavern where he stops for a drink due to the overwhelm he feels, he will meet Marmeladov, an alcoholic and sad official who begins to chat with him explaining his family misfortunes and how his daughter Sonia she is forced into prostitution because of her and that her wife's money Catarina is not sufficient. Chapter I

The second part begins with Raskolnikov's thoughts believing that he is crazy. He gets angry with himself for not being more careful and just when he is beginning to feel overwhelmed by the situation, he receives a subpoena from the police. He, frightened, opens it and realizes that it is a demand from the usurer for not having paid the rent. He goes to the summons and after signing some papers, he hears how the police talk about the murder of the usurer. Rodion faints.

Chapter II

The protagonist he decides to hide the jewels that link you to the crime. He wanders through the city until he finds a courtyard where he can hide everything.

Chapter III

He is sick with guilt, and he goes into a kind of feverish state for four days in which nightmares and delusions visit him. Natacha, Razuikhim and a government official they wait until she wakes up and passes her illness to give her money sent by her mother.

Chapter IV

Rodión learns that a painter who lives in the usurer's building has been arrested and accused of committing the murder of the old old woman. A stranger appears in the plot: Pedro Petrovich.

Chapter V

Raskolnikov confesses to Sonia that he has killed the old usurer and Isabel, her sister. The girl wants her to give herself up so she can redeem her grief. Sonia reacts in a very tender way and is not scared by Rodion.

Chapter V

Andrei Semionovich appears to warn Sonia that her mother is very upset. She runs in search of her. Rodión returns home with Dunia and when he thinks she is going to tell him that she knows about the murder, she begins to tell him about her best friend and how incredible she seems to him. Shortly after, Rodión learns that Sonia's mother has completely lost her mind. They chase her for a while until they finally manage to lead her to her room, where she dies.

Chapter I

His best friend visits Rodión to reassure him by bringing him the news that the usurer's murderer has already been convicted. When he goes out into the street, the boy meets the judge, so he invites him to come in.

Chapter II

Like many other times, the conversation between the protagonist and the judge becomes thoughtful and philosophical. The judge assures him that he has changed his mind regarding his suspicions about him as guilty of the murder. But a second line of dialogue begins to confuse Rodión, he is scared when the judge decides to defend the painter that he has confessed. When Rodión asks the judge who the murderer is, he he lets her know that he already knows it's him.

Chapter III

Raskolnikov enters a canteen where he meets Arcadio. After a talk, the student threatens the man with killing him if he ever marries his sister.

Chapter IV

After the talk, Arcadio goes to Dunia's house. Rodia imagines that this man is up to something, but loses track of him. Once they were reunited at Dunia's house, he told her that the usurer's murderer is his brother.

Chapter V

Dunia refuses to believe it and while they argue, Arcadio throws himself on her with sexual intentions. Dunia points a revolver at him and accuses him of being the murderer. When Arcadio asks her if one day she will love him and she answers no, he lets her go.

Chapter VI

Arcadio visits Sonia to deliver money to help her family. She gives it to him claiming that he is leaving the city, but when he leaves, he commits suicide with a revolver.

Chapter VII

Raskolnikov he says goodbye to his mother and his sister, he is willing to surrender to justice. Dunia explains that he was afraid of his suicide but Rodión explains that he wants to be a strong man and redeem his guilt.

Chapter VIII

Finally, Raskolnikov wants to say goodbye to Sonia but she chooses to accompany him to the police and not leave him alone in her confession.

Epilogue.

Raskolnikov ends up being sentenced to eight years in prison in Siberia, that he will manage to carry in better shape since he himself considers that he should be punished.
