In this lesson that begins in a TEACHER we are going to get to know the main characters of The Colloquium of the dogs. This is one of the works that belong to the collection of Exemplary novels, written by Miguel de Cervantes, the most famous and international writer who has produced Spanish letters.
On The Colloquium of the dogs we found one of the most unique creations of Cervantes, not only among the various exemplary novels, but also among all his work. Bordering on fantasy, it narrates the conversation between two dogs that receive the gift of speech and can comment on their experiences throughout their lives.
For once, human beings are the subject of comments, criticisms, and views of another species, dogs in this case. This is the vehicle that Cervantes uses to offer a somewhat bitter and corrupt image of the man and society of the time. We started!

Berganza, main character of the work.
Undoubtedly, the main characters of The Colloquium of the dogs they are obviously the dogs that keep the conversation going. First of all, we will talk about Berganza, the hairy one who is the one who carries the entire basis of the story, because it is his life that counts.
In Berganza we found a rather calm personality, or that at least he has found tranquility in his new location, as the guardian dog of the Hospital de la Resurrección in Valladolid.
Throughout the narrative, he tells Cipión, his canine companion, his wanderings with human beings. It is observed that with practically everyone he has done badly, they have tried to corrupt him and he has suffered from his birth until he reached his current place.
Thus, we can consider Berganza as the vehicle, the character who gives voice to suffering in a picaresque tone, which Cervantes again incorporates here, to speak of the human being seen from a different perspective, that of a dog that he has had that suffer hunger, mistreatment, bribery attempts and have even come close to dying from greed, corruption or the inability of their various masters.

Cipión, the co-star of Colloquio de los Perros.
The dogs that take care of the Hospital de la Resurrección are two, Berganza and Cipión, and both are known as the Maudes dogs. Thus, just as the first is the one who narrates, we can consider this second the one who points, he thinks, offers the philosophical point of view or even the moral or explanation of each of the adventures of his co-worker.
Cipión is the silencePerhaps the same silence that so many people of the seventeenth century in which Cervantes lived chose to have so as not to denounce what they saw around them. However, the point of view of this dog, every time he speaks, is usually reflective, philosophical.
Cypion can be considered as the voice of reason, as well as the silence of understanding. He is the character who knows how to be quiet and listen while they tell him stories, and he also has the experience and the knowledge to contribute a reflective, moralizing, philosophical and even a little melancholic.

Other characters in The Colloquium of the Dogs.
Obviously, throughout the entire narrative, while Berganza tells of his life adventure, other characters appear important in his life, usually his masters and their relationships, friends and families. Among them, we can talk about:
- Nicolas the Blunt: an angry waiter who works in a slaughterhouse and who even tries to kill the dog, whom he treats with very bad manners.
- Nicolas's wife: she deceives Berganza, hence the Romo tries to kill the dog.
- Shepherds: Berganza also ends up working with some shepherds. They try to kill a wolf that kills the herd, but in reality they are the ones who are killing the herd.
- Sheriff: the history of the bailiff is perhaps the most complex, since he has as a partner a notary public, and he is a friend of Colindres, a prostitute. Also included in this adventure are Monipodio, the head of the house of prostitutes and a French man who steals money. Without a doubt, it is the one that most and best reflects the corruption of the human soul of the time.
- The witches: both Camancha and Cañizares are two witches who create a web of lies, making people believe that Berganza is the resurrection of the dead daughter of a family.
However, in this novel many characters appear, so it can be said that it is quite choral. The total is around 30, although these here we see named the most important.
