As it cannot be otherwise, the first thing we must do is read calmly and carefully the poem that we have to analyze. A good exercise to accompany the first leisurely reading of the text is try to summarize it then with your own words, in order to verify that you have truly understood what is the message that the author wants to convey to us through the fragment and also what is its theme.

Once we have understood what the message of the poem is and what is the intention with which the poet wrote it, we can focus on it analysis of the formal and metric structure; that is, of what literary resources the author is used to convey his message to us.

We must also know what is the metric that appears in the text and what is your rhyme, since it is essential to understand the metric operation of the poem since each lyrical composition will use one meter or another depending on the type of poetry the subject, the topic being discussed, the time in which the fragment is written or the audience the piece is addressed to, among many other issues.

On the other hand, if we consider it appropriate, we can include in our analysis a brief reference to our own personal interpretation either the poem or the work in which it is inserted, since through a personal conclusion we can better understand the primary purpose of the poem.
