Examples of hiatuses

A hiatus is when two vowels in a row are pronounced in two strokes of the voice, that is, they are in two different syllables. To understand these two concepts better, it will be necessary to know the types of vowels that there are: weak or closed vowels and strong or open vowels. A diphthong is formed with a weak or closed vowel plus any vowel (weak or strong). Instead, a hiatus will be formed with two strong vowels or a strong vowel plus a weak one with a graphic accent. You will understand this explanation much better in the video through the examples that I will show you.

But to understand what hiatuses are, it is best to see many examples of words that have hiatuses and in those cases examples of how to separate them. Next, in a PROFESSOR we show you many examples separated by in which vowel is the hiatus. If you have questions or want to share with all users hiatus examples You can do it using the comments field and we will be happy to answer you and help you differentiate the gaps.

What is the hiatus? With examples.

To know what a hiatus is, it is important that we take into account the classification of vowels in the Spanish language. You should know that vowels can be of 2 types:

  • Open: a, e, o
  • Closed: i, u

Once you are clear about this concept, it is important that you know that the hiatus is when some of these combinations of vowels (open and closed, open and open, etc.) are united but are in syllables independent. The hiatus separates, the diphthong joins.

Types of hiatuses in Spanish

Depending on the type of vowel that joins, we are faced with one type of hiatus or another. Here we discover which are the 3 kinds of hiatuses that we can find in the Spanish language. They are as follows:

  1. Open and closed vowel or vice versa with a check mark in the closed. It would be the example of TRUNK that would separate ba-úl
  2. Open vowel with open. An example of this type of hiatus would be the word CHAOS that separates ca-os
  3. Equal vowels. In these cases, the vowels are the same and are united in the word (two a, two o, two u, etc.). An example of such a hiatus is the word READ that is separated from read

The vowel combinations that are Hiatus.

There are two types of hiatus:

  • The Accentual Hiatus (or hiatus due to dissolution, provoked or adiphthong) is a type of hiatus that results from the meeting between a open vowel (a, e, o) with a closed vowel (i, u) that is accented so it must have an accent obligatorily. Some examples of accent hiatus: sa-ú-com, sa-bí-a, dí-a, cal-ma-rí-a, go-h-ass, Ma-rí-a
  • The Simple Hiatus is one that consists of the separation into different syllables of two open vowels (a, e, o) or two closed vowels (i, u) equal. Some simple hiatus examples: ca-o-ba, sa-e-ta, se-mi-in-cons-cien-te, zo-ó-lo-go, a-or-ta, co-or-di-nar
